Welcome to the
Unofficial Message Board for Oregon State Gymnastics!
Currently there are still be 36 teams qualified to NCAA Regionals, but only 16 seeds for the 4 Regional sites, 4 placed at each (see below). Individuals qualifying to Regionals: All individual qualifiers will be assigned a team on Friday to compete with, going after the team competes on an event ... there will be a total of 12 AAders and 16 event specialists across the 4 Regionals ... keeping the same team's gymnasts in the same Regional. Also, gymnasts that are a part of the loosing team in the Thursday "play-in" meet, that would have otherwise qualified to Regionals as an individual, will compete on Friday night with a chance to advance to Nationals. NOTE: These "seed" #'s are NOT necessarily NQS Rank ... they are the assigned "seeds" based on the placing criteria listed below!) (I've noted differences between 2018-19 & 2019-20 by strike throughs and bold text.)
9 teams are placed at each of the 4 Regional sites ... on Day-1 of 3, teams ranked 8 & 9 at each Regional compete in a Thursday afternoon dual-meet, the winner advances to one of two 4-team Semi-Final sessions on Day-2 (Friday), the top-two teams from the Day-2 meets advance to the Day-3 Saturday Regional Final 4-way meet ... with the Top-2 advancing to Nationals from each Regional.
The top 12 all-arounders and top 16 event specialists based on national qualifying score and not on a qualifying team will be selected. The list of top 12 all-arounders and top 16 individual event specialists will include individual qualifying scores from the teams competing in the first round to ensure those individuals compete in the individual competition, regardless of whether their teams advance from the first round. (The number of individual AAders and event specialists may vary in each Regionals.)
Meet start times (local time) are as follows:
Thursday, April 2nd, 1st-round dual-meet 3pm (Teams 8 & 9 by NQS)
(Note: The 5th through 9th ranked teams at each Regional will be assigned by geography ... so theoretically the 8th & 9th ranked teams at a Regional won’t necessarily be those ranked #29 to #36! Although based on 2019 Regionals, they were the teams #29-#36 who were placed at the nearest available sites ... but they were not "seeded" ... 31vs34, 32vs33, 29vs30, & 35vs36 ... "seeding" would have changed the last two to 29vs36 & 30vs35!)
Friday April 3rd, Semi-Finals 2pm & 7pm
(The group of 4 with the highest seeded team competes in the evening Semi-Final session ... along with the winning team from Thursday ... as these teams are to be paired, and the Thursday team is required to have a minimum 24 hours between the starts of their two meets.)
Saturday April 4th, Regional Finals 7pm
Rotations (Semis & Finals rotations were determined by a draw ... except Thursday's dual meet):
Thursday – Higher “NQS” team gets Olympic rotation (2nd team gets Brs, Vlt, Flr, Bm)
Friday – Vlt NQS-4, Brs NQS-2, Bm NQS-1, Flr NQS-3
Saturday – Vlt Sess2-Team1, Brs Sess1-Team1, Bm Sess1-Team2, Flr Sess2-Team2
Selection/Placing Process for 2019 NCAA Regionals
The “Recognized Format” for grouping the 16 Seeded teams is …
(“Left-side” of NCAA Championships Bracket)
1 – 8 – 9 – 16
4 – 5 – 12 – 13
(“Right-side” of NCAA Championships Bracket)
2 – 7 – 10 – 15
3 – 6 – 11 – 14
(This is how the Seeded Teams will be distributed for the two Friday Semi-Final Sessions ... Afternoon & Evening: 8-9 & 1-16 ; 5-12 & 4-13 ; 7-10 & 2-15 ; 6-11 & 3-14.)
Joining the Seeded teams in the afternoon sessions are the 6th & 7th NQS ranked teams; joining the Seeded teams in the evening sessions are the 5th NQS ranked team & the winner of the Thursday session.
Placing of teams to the 4 Regional sites (Penn State, Oklahoma, Denver, and UCLA):
- Pair according to the recognized 16-seed format.
- Identify hosts.
- All host teams stay home to compete, whether they are a top-16 seed or not.
- If two or three host teams are paired, the lowest-seeded host in the group will be exchanged adjusted with
- When teams are paired or when a seeded pairing does not have a seeded host, every effort will be made to maintain geographic proximity for the higher-seeded team, when possible.
- Teams 17-36 will be placed geographically at one of the four regional sites, while at the same time trying to avoid, when possible, pairing conference rematches of the teams.
- Unseeded Hosts will be placed into the bracket based on NQS to maintain the integrity of the bracket.
- All-around competitors and event specialists will be placed geographically at one of the four regional sites. All-arounders and individuals from the same team will be placed at the same regional, but not necessarily in the same session.
- To ensure the top-seeded teams have the least number of individuals competing with them, the committee will pair the highest-ranked all-arounder at the site with the lowest-seeded team (or lowest NQS team at the site first, then proceed to the seeded teams), the next highest all-arounder with the next lowest-seeded team, etc. to ensure the top-seeded teams have the fewest number of individuals competing with them, which maintains integrity of the bracket and fairness for both teams and individuals. (The committee reserves discretion with individual and all-arounder pairings since part of the process is dependent on how many individuals are selected from teams placed at each regional and on what events those individuals are competing.)
This says “… every effort will be made to maintain geographic proximity for the higher-seeded team …” … so a pairing of 4 seeded teams without a host would be placed with an unseeded host geographically nearest the highest seeded team in the bracket … they might also move seeded hosts between pairings to place the highest seeded team in the pairing, to the geographically nearest Regional (if possible).
Go Beavs!!,
Richard
