NOAA Fisheries announces that the Lobster Area 4 seasonal closure (off northern New Jersey and New York) will be from April 30 to May 31, 2016.
This has been modified from the previous Area 4 seasonal closure dates of February 1-March 31.
This modification was recommended by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, which leads the management for American lobster. This area closure shift has already been implemented by states adjacent to Area 4. The change is intended to reduce fishing effort on the Southern New England lobster stock, which is in poor condition.

What a joke. Notice they don't touch area 3, offshore where the majority of lobster and big lobster are caught? Remember the Discovery show "lobstermen" this is the area they were fishing and Georges Bank. Remember the stuffed pots they were pulling? For us with the seasons changing, Spring coming latter it seems most diving really doesn't get started until June and lobster really aren't on the move until July. It won't be a big inconvenience for us. I believe area 5 starts just North of Barnegat inlet, like around the old coast guard station. So you Manasquan boats, stay in your own backyard. LOL
Yes. Wasn't the area 4 closure the same date this year 2015, so what has changed? This time it appears area 5 is exempt, big deal. The reason is there is NOT a significant lobster industry in area 5 and hasn't been in a long time. I'd say 20+ years. What needs to be closed is area 3 and Georges Bank, but I doubt you'll see that happen.
