Finally a break in the weather after the big storm and we decided to take advantage of it. We expected inshore vis to be questionable so we opted to push on to the Gulf Trade stern. Seas were calm. On they way we noticed the water was very milky green looking. I'm not sure when this cleared but I estimate around 5 to 7 miles off. When we got to the wreck we were greeted by a school of dolphins. The swam right up to us and passed under out boat. Surface vis was approx 30' and there was a pretty strong north to south current. Bottom vis was equal or better but there was a lot of detritus settled across everything and it was easily stirred up. There was also quite a bit of particulate suspended throughout the entire water column. There was no noticeable Thermocline. I'm not sure if it was the temperature change or the storm but there were not nearly as many lobsters as we've seen on this wreck in the past. The first one I caught was a female full of eggs. She managed to grab my dry suit and rip my wrist seal. Prior to that, I managed to get my spear pole stuck in a rivet hole. Despite the challenges and finishing my deco completely soaked, I was happy to be back in the water. Seal replaced and dive two was much more enjoyable. I'm hoping the visibility will continue to increase dramatically over the next 30 days as the sun sets sooner and stays lower on the horizon the plankton will quickly die off leaving us with that super clear fall water!
Yea, we missed you guys out there last weekend. we passed by your empty sad lonely boat on our way out. Too bad. I think this weekend is a complete blowout for diving. We're shooting for next Friday!
