Deep Flooded mine outside of Brewster, NY

Saturday John Eells and I did bottom sounder work at the mine site using an inflatable. Mixed results, I feel the heavy particulate is having an effect on the depth finder. We mowed the lawn for about two hours, and finally dropped a shot line that went 325'. On our way back to the dive platform, as I was about to shut off the machine, John spotted it spiking to 300, 325, 350 and finally 370', but we had no shot line on board. At the platorm, I rigged and second second shot line and we paddled back out and then the finder couldn't spot the shaft again. I rough guessed it by the seat of my pants, but it fell to 200'. This shaft is proving to be elusive.
We have a good basis for exploration next weekend, and we have some talented divers on board. Should prove interesting! Wish us luck!

I have never dived a mine so maybe that's why I don't understand what the attraction is. I have dove cenotes in Mexico= "BORING" (for me anyway). Is there anything down there to bring back or eat or much to see other than some rusty mining equipment left when it flooded? I would dive a mine if there were exposed gold veins or some similar kind of booty.
I guess I want ships cargo, ships parts, interesting wreckage or sea food. At least I like to see all that stuff is I don't always get it. If I dive to 300+ feet its going to be for a good reason and I don't mean catching lobster or fish. More like some $$ or some interesting recovery. I certainly don't dive the deeper wrecks to tell people how deep I can dive(I know we all know some people who do just than)
To each his own and if more people dive the mines and underground cave systems there is that much less pressure on the wrecks I dive.
That's just me and hopefully not everyone feels the same.

Hi Howard: The reason why I elected to dive this flooded mine is mystery. It has not been dove in a dozen years, and then it was by police searching for a murder victim's body. Three are known to have been lost there, never found. The history of the mine itself from it's origins in 1853 thru the closing in 1897, the deaths of thirteen miners in 1895 by a collapse (all recovered). The extreme depth, originally 725', now unknown, because of collapse and filling in of debris. Mine was dumped into until 1940's. The Navy used it as a testing ground for sonar during the 1950's. The
mystery of why a commercial diving school constructed a
considerable pontoon dive platform and steel stairwell in the 1980's and then abandoned, why is there such clean water in spite of cars, tractor, crane and heavy machinery dumped in there as
well as junk for over twenty years? The water has been tested as
drinkable. Where is the strong spring coming from and the heavy
currents at depth? Some other reasons are the testing of dive equipment in hostile conditions, as the water temps are 46 degrees from about 15' down to the bottom, example is testing the DUI "Blue Heat" system for hours on end decompressing. Practicing staged bailout, testing the Hammerhead Extreme's Rev D electronics at greater depths in very cold conditions. This stuff is not done very often. I personally love diving wrecks offshore, in blue water and great visibility. They make for fantastic photos, this is not the same, but there is a different agenda. Dive safe and often....

While as mentioned mines, caves, lakes and ice diving never interested me and some others, but that doesn't mean I don't read and take interest in those that do dive them. The bit of history you provided may explain why your doing what your doing.

If possible I'd like to see video.

Maybe it was mentioned somewhere and I missed it, what was mined there? From your description it sounds like there is a 200' "hole" in the ground and somewhere within this hole is a vertical mine shaft of 550'?

Iron ore mine. It's a large site, terraced down to max of 725', horizontal tunnels bored out along the way down to chase ore, and abandoned when they played out. Basically from the git go it drops 175' from the edge all the way around. Debris have filled in somewhat over a century. We are just starting this exploration, this may take years...

This is a scuba BB and as such cave or mine diving is scuba diving. As with you I never had interest in cave, ice, quarry or lake diving. We're fortunate we live on the coast and have the busiest shipping terminal on the East coast and the world wars to have the ships to dive on. I think it's great we're so diversified.

Since I haven't been diving in a while I try to live it through dive reports and the excellent video's Dan and others sometimes post.

I don't mean to bag on anyone, but as with TV, if you don't like the show, change the channel. I see it as Dan is sharing his dive adventures. Anyone that has been here for some years has probably noticed a dramatic drop in diver discussions and dive reports. In effect any discussions have dwindled down to the same approx. 6 to 8 divers and diveboats. Where did everybody go?
