Sunday's forecast did not look too bad. Blowing a little in the am and then going flat so we headed out for some diving. I was joined by Bob Harris (world renown master chef and TV/radio NJ diving resource) , Bart Major, Dive guru and dive equipment recycler, Harry Roecker owner operator of the Constellation dive research vessel in Cape May(South Jersey wreck researcher) and Stan Zagliski captain of the fishing vessel Elain B.( Highlands Party Boat) and wreck historian specializing in North Jersey wrecks. How lucky could I get to have these guys diving on my boat? Cheryl (editor of Cave Diver Magizine) you should have come with us to help round out the diving knowledge on the boat. I hope you can make it before you head back South.
We left the inlet and were greeted by misleadingly calm seas but with a strong West wind. As we moved offshore the waves started to chop up a bit but not too bad. Our first stop was on the 120 wreck were we had to reconfigure our wreck hook so we could bow anchor. We experienced good vis ( about 20 ft) and bottom temps between 39 and 40. Even though it was a little warmer than our last trip it felt cold to me. With the good conditions in the area we figured it was best to stay close by so we headed over to the NE sailor where we had similar conditions. There was not many fish on the bottom and the ones I saw were not worth shooting. We did however see quite a few lobster . Some lobster came up with Stan winning the pool with a nice sized bug . Many of the lobster were just too deep in the holes to get out which may be due to the cold clear water. Between the first and second dive the wind died and the seas flattened . This allowed us to fire up the grill after the second dive so Bart and Bob combined Chef duties. It was great coming up from the dive to a nice hot meal. It was lucky I did not make a longer dive as I heard Bart was eyeing my food. Next week I think we are heading South to keep the boat by Barnegat Inlet until the fall.
i would have to say the vis was the best we have had in a long time - with a ton of ambient light to only make it better - to clarify one point - i had the largest lobster of the day - Bob the chef had two , one of which was very respectable, Stan, well he got a small one, but seeing how he is afraid of the big ones, he did just fine
