Bart, Stan , Bob and I got out today. We stayed inshore for the first dive due to the predicted strong NW wind. Vis inshore and North was not good so we headed South and offshore a bit ,. Vis at the Spring Lake sailor was better at 10 ft or so . Bottom temp was 34 and we spotted a few lobster,, tog and ling. IT was beautiful in the afternoon as the wind died. The AM was tough with the cold spray freezing on the boat and windows even with the heater going full blast. It was comfortable in the cabin all day but brutal on the back deck in the AM
Thanks Cheryl , Bart seems to be doing ok and when I asked how he was doing he completely forgot that he had hurt himself. We were planning on diving today but the forecast changed yesterday and was not good for today . I now regret not going as it looks and feels very nice outside. Instead I did some preventative maintaince and put new drive belts and a fuel pump on the boat today.
Due to the overwhelming concern for my well being as to the state of my finger,I find an explanation must be posted......
As stated by good Capt Howard the sea ice had built up on deck making the conditions outside a slippery mess. The shot line had been deployed and secured to the wreck, my job was to hook the buoy and stern tie it to the port cleat. As i was reaching to the buoy, (name changed to protect the innocent, or in this case to protect the guilty!!!) Capt Ftan thought it would be Funny to push me further over the side as i reached to the buoy with the hook. Again yesterdays conditions were not for the meek, or inexperienced but totally acceptable for those T.U.E. on this trip. As i felt myself beginning to slide on the sea ice towards the icy waters of the cold Atlantic, I pulled back on the boat hook driving the butt of the hook into the side of the hull!!!!! unfortunately the second finger of my left hand was in the way..... After the finger strike occurred i can not remember clearly what followed - I do remember allot, ALLOT of yelling and Bright Red Blood spraying all over the deck!!!!!! - somehow this T.U.E completed his duty and retrieved the buoy just as the pain became so great he had to sit down......
Now some of you reading this may find this amusing.... usually these are the sick people who like to see road kills and even repeatably run them over with their cars......
All I can say is this, its all fun and games until someone looses an eye, or in this case a finger
As of this writing the finger is immobilized and is throbbing like a .....(i will let you fill in the next two words), on the dorsal surface there is a deep laceration.
i would like to thank all that expressed concern for my well being and urge all reading this not to be to critical on Capt Ftan's actions. He was just kidding around but that is how accidents do occur... I am sure it is a lesson well learned...
As to the identity of the first wreck dove it will have to wait until the inshore vis clears a bit - i can say this, it was wooden, old and feeling very promising....
I had no idea that you got cut that bad. I thought you were squeezing it to push the blood out of a very small(self inflicted) abrasion but I must have missed the bad cut. I guess that explains the hysterical crying I heard in the back of the boat. I have some insurance that may help with the hospital bills and we may need to file a claim. Let me know if you need a ride to the hospital. I am sure the dive community will help with a blood drive if you need a transfusion. Hopefully there is no long term brain damage, I mean nerve damage.
All i can say is it was a very good time and the water temp made it spiritual lol - I got down for the two dives, did my swim around, saw a big moon snail - found a nice pin with wood attached - grabbed some lead - -played with a little lobster and saw stan on the bottom giving me hand signals - my lights worked perfectly and my suit did not leak a bit - Though some might find these conditions a bit to challenging, it was totally doable for this True Underwater Explorer!!!!!!! -
