Proper way to do a bridal sisal tie in?

A very talented diver and dive equipment designer, Enrique Alvarez, told me it's very simple: On the chain, place a shackle, run a 2" SS ring thru the shackle. Run the sisal line thru the SS ring, leave it free to move. Tie either end of the sisal onto the wreck in appropriate positions. Now, the sisal slips back and forth thru the ring, and the stress remains even on both ends of the sisal tie points. This sounds over simplified, as there is timing involved, to tighten the stress on the sisal at intervals to take the stress off the chain, so it solely rests upon the sisal rope. At the end of dive operations, the chain around the wreck is removed, and clipped upon itself with a carabeaner, This method should work unless there is a 180 degree shift in current direction. If a true second sisal line is wanted, then repeat as above. There are many ways to skin a cat, but I think my friend has something here, to all you mates out there...

We grapnel the wreck, take down a second line with a length of chain on it. Tie in by taking the chain around an object that is not open ended and use a stainless stell carabineer to clip back into the chain. We then send the grapnel to the surface via lift bag. When it's time to go, we take a length of the thinner sisal and make the same loop the chain did. This gives us 2x the strength of a single strand and works in most conditions for our 31' boat. If it's rough out with higher wind, we'll use the thicker sisal. This is the way I've done it for over 15 years and seems to be the safest way. At least for us. Additionally, when the first line with the grapnel is retrieved, it is immediately connected to our anchor. Should the boat break free for any reason, we will deploy the anchor to make deco for the divers easier. Lastly, we set the anchor alarm on the GPS to alert the surface guys of an issue before too much time passes. Good topic. I've always been curious about how others approach this. I can't imagine being upstream of a grapnel that is held my sisal with a lift back waiting for it to rocket to the surface if the line prematurely breaks... Be safe out there guys!

Sounds good but ask Glenn how he did it. He showed me and it seems to make it even easier with a lot less pieces. Anyone else want to kick in their way , this could get interesting. Like you said there are many ways to skin a cat.

This is nothing new. We've been doing it this way for 15 years. Although I wouldn't hang a hook on sisal till I was ready to leave, nylons a bit safer. Capt. Bill and the crew of the Tunaseazure

Capt. Bill: Understood, neither would I rely on sisal to hold a boat for any length of time. I didn't think this was new, Enrique has been around for a long time.

If you are going to use sisal or nylon, but especially sisal. I think it makes more sense to bridal it with two separate pieces of rope each tied to the chain. Running the rope through the eye of the shackle effectively gives you only one piece of rope. Also, from experience, and from being yelled at repeatedly by someone who will remain nameless, I always double wrap the end opposite of the shackle to the wreckage. This prevents it from chafing against the wreckage and breaking.
