CRAP! Today we left the slip and crossed Barnegat Bay in thick fog. As we got closer to the inlet the fog let up a bit making it easier to navigate. Our first stop was the Cassoon. As there was a lobster pot line on the wreck and we did not want to snag it we dropped a shot line with a bouy. Something went wrong and the bouy was on the water but no line attached. We quickly set up a second hook and managed to grab the wreck. Bottom vis was about 15 to 20 ft and bottom temps have warmed up a bit. Not much life on the wreck and only one keeper bug came up and a few sea bass. We did manage to recover the first hook . Next stop was a small snag just a few miles off shore and north. As it was so small we did not hook the wreck but instead buoyed it. The only thing the diver sent to set the hook found was a brass circular piece that had a nice bug. Maybe it got buried from the storm or got hit by a dragger. We got him back on the boat and looked around for the bouy and it was gone. Very strange but maybe I hit it with the boat. Next we figured on hitting a broken up wooden barge (Princess Cheryl's wreck)on the way back. We tried to grapple the wreck but managed to snag another pot line. Jumped in and got the line off. We then sent another shot line in and tied it to the main wreckage. Turns out not much left to this wreck either. It was a beautiful day on and under the water but still a Crappy day due to snagging pot lines, dropped grapples and not much sea life. Hopefully next week will be better. Other than the portholes over the winter and a few deadeyes this season is starting off kind of slow.
Cheryl ,not much left to the wreck now. Maybe the sand will move a bit and we will see the wreck again or it may just be torn apart and mostly gone. It did supply us with lots of lobster in the past. This year has been bad for seafood so far. Let me know when you come up to NJ and maybe you can kick start our hunting.
