Trying to get Arundo artifacts. Family of the captain.

Hey there. My great-grandfather, A.C. Troeleman was the captain of the S.S. Arundo when it was torpedoed by a German U boat. A year ago, all I knew about him and the ship were stories my grandfather told me. I've spent a lot of time researching, and trying to find out as much as I can about him, his career as a captain, and the sinking of the Arundo (which prompted him to move his family to the US).

What I'm trying to do is get some sort of physical artifact from the wreckage that is from Arundo. Not really the cargo, but something from the actual ship. I know the bell and the sextant were brought to the surface years ago, and these are two of the main things I would love to get. Does anyone here know where I might be able to find these things? Maybe there's something else from the bridge or captains quarters down there? This ship is a significant piece of family history, and would mean a lot to us to have something to remember him and this event. I know it would mean a lot to my grandfather as well.

I would go down and get something myself but in spite of being an avid boater, I'm not a diver. Plus, I've never been to New Jersey.

I have a coffee mug from the Arundo. It is a plain white mug that looks like you'd find in a diner... except it does have the maker's mark and date on the bottom. Traveling this weekend, but will post a picture when I get home Monday.

Maybe 10 years back and I don't remember the divers name. A set of solid brass binoculars with all 4 lens intact were recovered. They were full of gunk and barnicles on the glass....but WOW what a find. I have also seen at a shop I was once associated with a brass fire suppression nozzle and that was another fine specimen. Personally, I have only gotten some very good bugs over the years. Good Luck with your search.

post script - for everyones information - i did not force anyone to give up their dividers that someone happen to find while digging for artifacts - ok i kind of did but the really bad part is i never sent them and they are now in my collection loloooololollolollaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - evil laughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ha! Well, maybe they're out to trick you but I wouldn't dare. Not without knowing you first at least.

I know that people have their own collection of things they've dug up and there's probably an attachment there, so it may be difficult to part ways with something. Heck, it takes plenty of time and money to get artifacts in to your collection. Thats a luxury I don't have just yet. Not saying I want anything for free, but a guy in his mid-20's with student loans to pay off can't afford too much. Just know that I wouldn't be asking if it weren't of great importance to me and my family.

Ok well I guess Bart(man) is not willing to give anything up here. If there is someone out there that has an artifact from the Arundo I'd love to hear from you. I didn't know we were talking about BUCKAROOS or in my case, as most people know, it would be called TRIBUTE - Now if a person was willing to say, (PAY TRIBUTE) to me for something i find on the bottom, it changes things. What type or amount of TRIBUTE are we talking here...Its amazing how when someone PAYS TRIBUTE they can get things done..contact me here on the board until this TRIBUTE TO ME is a little more finalized

We were there on Sunday - i was doing my normal collecting and came across the part of the Helm that is used to steer the boat... I am in the process of restoring it to its original condition.... i can send photos and if Mo allows, I could even post one here in the near future. Respond back if you are intrested and what your budget is like...Dont be cheap like some others i know (HBB and BRB)lololololol
