Deep Bone Bruise

Question, Have any of you out there had a femur bone bruise? And how long until you were back in the water.

I messed up my knee back in early august and being a guy didn't do much about it until I really messed it up about 2 week later (thus why no dive reports). MRI said I had a torn Meniscus and a fractured femur in the knee joint. Ortho surgeon said he only saw a bad bone bruise. That was two weeks ago and the knee does not feel better. I'm not due to see the ortho again until 9/20 and I'm walking around w/ a knee brace. Dying to get back in the water but worried about more trauma coming up the ladder etc. At this point I'm pretty worried that my dive season is done.

Not sure how happy I'd be that the ortho. and who ever read the MRI disagree. Might want a second opinion. That said take care of the knee, the wrecks aren't going anywhere. Oh and the season doesn't "end" you just add more insulation under your dry suit.

Capt Al,

I was not happy that the Radiology report was differnt then the Orthos reading of the MRI, but I couldn't see any fracture either. That said, the Ortho is one of the best in the philly region (head US ski team ortho for 12 years, did Peekabo Streets Knee etc).

I have checked and the brace will fit under the dry suit and over it if needed. Time will tell I guess.

Brian,
Having had a knee operation, the Dr's really don't know until they go into the knee and look. The X-ray and MRI can only reveal so much and any damage to softer tissue it will miss. I will have to have a knee replacement at some point in time because most of the cartledge is gone. The MRI and X-ray didn't tell the Dr's that before the operation. Call me and I can get into it more.

I would not mess with a torn meniscus My daughter tore hers when she was 15 and it had to be operated on... So be very careful. (as someone who had several ortho surgeries). Get a good ortho. Cpt Al is right, I would find another....

Thanks, I should have been more specific in my post. The MRI report from radiology said I had all that damage the Ortho, after looking at the MRI said He felt it was a bone bruise, with out all the damage. So I hope time will heal it. In the mean time I was test driving a couple of mid 80's Ferrari Mondials. What a blast.

It is not uncommon for false positive "readings" shortly after an injury. Swelling and fluids sometimes present as possible fractures, where the two areas meet (fluid/no fluid)
I would certainly seek a second opinion, but I would defer to the Ortho guy over the Radioloigist.
I'm pretty certain the gentle rocking back forth of a dive boat works wonders as physical therapy.

You gotta love a guy with a fractured femur and torn meniscus trying to figure out how to fit a knee brace under his dry suit. You just don't see that kind of determination in a resort in Grand Cayman.

Maybe just wrap your knee in duct tape?
