YouTube video link to a very early in the season dive to the "Maurice Tracey" in shore wreck. Low vis, probably around 5-10' at most, mid forties water temps at this time of the year. Fair conditions, but overcast skies. This video illustrates a solid tie in via the shot line method. Also here is running a wreck reel line while scootering. Tony did an excellent job! Gopro was used in SD mode at 60 FPS.
I have been thinking about trying out my GoPro on a dive. I assume you used the head mount straps. Did you mount the straps under your hood? Did you use any camera lighting? Would you recommend SD Mode at 60 FPS? Any other suggestions? Thanks, RogerC
Re: "Depth Charge" visits "Maurice Tracey" on 3/18/12
Hi Rodger: The only lighting I had with me was the 10 watt HID canister lamp, with 6 degree beam angle. Some guys are using the headstrap that GoPro provides, but I made a custom helmet and GoPro mount, and I have two LED backup flashlights as additional lighting, but they are too sourcy in my taste. I was trying different frame rates and HD and SD, to come up with a solution, but recently have gone with full blown HD 1080P, the irony is you have to downgrade the quality to view on the web, but it looks a bit better if shot in HD. Check out the new dive housing options from GoPro, the standard dome port on the regular housing gives a soft image, many are not happy with it. I am using a Golem Gear Delrin housing for mine, useful to 500', and flat crystal port for sharp picture. Get spare battery, and spare card, 16GB is good enough. 10X speed.
Thanks Dan. This is all very helpful. I recently ordered the GoPro version of the flat lens. I think I will try the head straps under the the hood but like the helmet idea. Some of the fun of Jersey wreck diving is making gear and configuring it. Roger
