NJOA: 3 Major Fishing/Hunting Bills Pass Senate Committee
NJOA Belmar, NJ 2/9/12
The New Jersey Outdoor Alliance (CF) is pleased to announce that three (3) outdoors related bills passed the Senate Environment and Energy Committee today. We would also like to thank NJOA (CF) council members Reef Rescue, JCAA, NJ Council of Diving Clubs, and NJOA for testifying on behalf of the bills. We would also like to thank those organizations unaffiliated with the NJOA (CF) that supported the bills.
A special thanks goes out to the Senate Environment and Energy Committee for their support as well as the Primary Sponsors and Co-Sponsors of the bills (listed below). The status/progress of the bill may be found at the link that follows:
So if they limit certain types of fishing gear on the artifical reefs will they not just move over to the real wrecks. personally I would rather dive the real wrecks with the history and stories. How about limiting certain types of fish gear not moving it from one to the other?

I think they have been on the Non Arifical wrecks for many many years already. I may be wrong but I think the issue was that the artifical reefs were paid for with sport fishing moneys and the commercial gear not only took a lot of fish off these reefs but limited the sport fishing on the reefs due to all the lines and gear in the water, etc.

I agree Howard. The problem I see is that the real wrecks which they are putting the pots on are now going to get worse due to the fact that they can not fish the artifical wrecks. Limiting the pots would be a better solution.

What limitations do you propose?
How would you propose those limitations be enforced?

If the pots are making it hard for others to fish then they could limit the Pots. I am not sure what a fisherman needs to be allowed to put a line of pots down but can the number of pots be limited? If they are causing a problem then less pots. Do the fisherman with pots have quotas? Maybe that would be a solution. Once a quota is met pull the pots.

The finfish trap fishery is closed to any new licenses. There are no limits on those holding licenses for the number of traps they can set. They have yet to meet or exceed their allocated quota in the Black Sea Bass fishery which is the primary species for traps. The recreational side has had their fishery shut down due to an “estimated” overfishing 2010-2011. The RFA has been asking for a restriction on finfish trap numbers and other regulations for at least three years with no response from NJDEP. The lobster industry is in the same situation of having a closed fishery but they are limited in the number of pots they can set and will soon have reductions to that number and a closed season which will affect us as well.

The end result of this exploitation...

is that we no longer have an Artificial Reef Program here in NJ. Marine Fisheries are no longer allowed, as of April 12, 2011, to use Sport Fish Restoration funds for our Reef Program, due to our Administration's and Legislature's lack of action on this conflict in over five years. Delaware fixed their issue and still has their program, we do not.
