Quite a few years ago (when I was young...haha) we went with our daughter to Robinson Club... a German owned resort, outside Tulum. Dive operator right on the club grounds. Also if you go and weather is windy, the Casa Cenote (an american expat owned hang out bar and grills on the beach and a cenote is right across the road, free and beautiful.. You must check them out, I went 3 times in the late 90's and early 2000...who knows if both places are still open...Enjoy!!!! I love mexico, but hubby wont go anymore.!!
Bring some extra cash, we got stopped by the military going into Cancun for the pre Easter celebration at gun point.. Hubby gave them 20 even tho they asked for 2.00...His theory, better to overpay then dead!!! They smiled a lot when they let us thru!!!!

Several years ago I stayed at the Dreams all inclusive resort in Puerto Aventuras. The resort is small but has some nice snorkeling off the beach. Dreams had just bought the resort and the resort had some issues with the turnover. There is a great dive operation on site. If you go to my web site http://mysite.verizon.net/vzey9dt2/hcbernwebsite/ you can see a video of me and my son diving. There is a very small town walking distance from the resort that has a dolphin research center and a show. While the resort includes food, we found a couple of restaurants in the town that had great food at great prices. There is another dive operation and dive store in the town. Also a shop where you can print out your boarding passes cheaper than the hotel charges. The hotel has transportation to Playa Carmen where you can take the ferry to Cozumel. The dive shop has a sister operation on Cozumel.
The hotel next to Dreams looked a little nicer and used the Dreams dive operator. I can't remember the name and don't know if it is all inclusive. I liked the location as it was a short ride to the Cozumel Ferry and the Talum ruins. If you want to talk on the phone, send me an email at hcbern@verizon.net and we can arrange a time.

Big B, you're asking the right man! I've been down that way about 25 times. Akumal is the place you want. It has everything you're asking for. The beach is beautiful and the snorkeling reef is right off the beach. Plus, the cenotes are right there if you want to jump in. Some of the hotels are small but they have all the stuff. The newer ones are huge. All-inclusive, pools, bars, dive shops... Really laid back town, Akumal is. Check it out. Playacar, the development just south of Playa Del Carmen is nice, but no snorkeling. You catch the ferry to Cozumel there, though. P.D.C. is a great town. Getting a bit too built up though. Check out Akumal. Tulum is pretty nice, but I never stayed there. I hear they have some all inclusives there, too. And they have the ruins, too. I don't know about the snorkeling. Check out Apple Vacations web site. They're the best for that kind of travel to Mexico. I've used them a million times. Everything included in one package. They're good. Traveling for dummies .
