How to restore pocket watch found in water

I was contacted by someone recently who found an old pocket watch in the the surf in Toms River just north of Lavallette. It appears to have been in the water for quite some time.

From the picture, you can see the condition and you can see a couple of shells attached to it.

This person is looking for help regarding finding out if there is any value to it, either historically or monetarily. In addition, I am looking to guide him in some way to restore this pocket watch to help identify the approximate age and make. I know there are divers out there who are knowledgeable in restoration techniques, and I hope you can provide some guidance.

there is a guy there that can fix or rebuild watches - i am not connected with the store other than he has fixed many of my extensive collection of old works of art (junk) that i like - he can even put in a totally new guts for a reasonable amount - i had this done when my fake soviet submarine watch got soaked in the shower - hes the only guy i know around here that does this type of work

IF ITS SOLID GOLD WHICH BY LOOKING AT IT I DO NOT THINK SO ..MAY BE GOLD PLATED.JUST USE A MAGNET OVER IT IF ITS GOLD YOU WILL KNOW.MAGNETS DO NOT STICK TO GOLD. THE OUT SIDE WILL LAST FOR EVER..JUST LOOK AT ALL THE VERY OLD SHIP WRECKS WHERE THEY FIND GOLD COINS OR GOLD CHAINS ( MEL FISHER) THEY LOOK AS GOOD AS THE DAY THEY WENT DOWN UNDER THE OCEAN.GOLD IS FOR EVER AND EVER.THIS MY FRIEND WILL WORK AS GOOD AS A CELL PHONE THAT FALL OFF ANY BOAT IN THE SALT WATER OCEAN..CLEAN IT AND PUT IT ON YOUR MANTEL OR GLASS SHOW OFF CASE OF STUFF YOU HAVE FOUND IN THE OCEAN...THE MOVEMENT IS TOASTED NEVER TO WORK AGAIN..

Until you figure out what to do, make sure it is kept in water.

Nice find!!
Sue fron the dive team found one of these a few years ago at the high lands, and did a pretty ggod job of cleaning it up.
Start with fresh water baths for a few weeks. Changing the water everyday. Follow this with baths of 50/50 white vineger and water. Changing the bath everyday.
Clean the watch with a tooth brush between each bath, if you can heat the bath this will help speed thing up alittle. Don't use a wire brush!!
You may not save the whole watch cause the pins that hold the gears are made of steel, and the arms of the face are made of steel too!
