A little note prior to the report, we have a friend of the boat who lost his speargun on the Mohawk Saturday 8/20. We were tied-in around the Boilers (not far from Barts artifact of the baby Jesus) His name is on the gun and he has promised a reward if anyone happens upon it while visiting the Mohawk!
Thursday 8/18 Artificial Reef
Same old, same old very bad viz on surface that gets good at the bottom. Today's destination would have warm bottom temps nearing 60* and viz in the 15-20 ft range depending how far away from the tie-in you got. This has been a very productive spot, but not as much today. Konger would get a monster bug right at 5 inch limit weighing in at 5 lbs. Multiple divers would shoot the same "winter" flounder (it being so big as too not even resemble a winter flounder, maybe 7 -8 lbs and almost 30 inches) Not much else today. Full boat and back at the dock around noon.....gotta love it!
Boat evenly divided between diggers and hunters so a visit to the Mohawk would be the destination for today. Again a full boat and a 20 minute or so ride later we were on site for some fun. Surface viz not quite as bad today (but still not great) Viz on the bottom outstanding at maybe 25+ft and very warm at 61*. Not many fish, but today would be "bug heaven" 11 lobsters to about 5 lbs and a couple fish would be the take today. As usual if there's something to find in the way of an artifact the Gillman usual does find it. A solid 1 inch by 3 foot copper door hinge was extricated from this old girl.....with stories of port holes and other items from the Gillman. Another fine day of diving on the North Atlantic and back at a very reasonable 1:00 pm (I know, I know it was a little further than usual....but he did keep the peddle to the metal)
Sunday 8/21 Artificial Reef
We were a little short with divers today, but Capt Bill did not want to lose the day. With the light boat and some afternoon weather being forecasted another quick ride out to the Reef was warranted. One of our favorites and one that has produced in the past would be our destination today. Wind blowing solidly from the south at a steady 15 and gusting higher made for a tough surface interval. Surface once again "Pea Soup" maybe 1 ft. Cleared nicely on the bottom to maybe 15 -20 ft if you got away from the tie-in. Temp was about 60* on the bottom. 5 Fluke, one very nice and healthy bug and Konger with his usual "LOAD" (Tog #1 male 10.3 lbs, Tog #2 female 9.6 lbs) would be the damage today. We also managed to get a very nice 22 lb anchor aboard to add to our collection. All in all another great day considering what was forecasted.
I'll have schedules posted shortly.
A hardy AAARRrrrrggggg! from Capt Bill and the crew of the Tuna Seazure.
We have spots available everyday this week with the exception of Saturday which is full. We have been getting full on pretty short notice. I would recommend if you are planning on joining us you call early to get the day you want. A couple of our regular divers are hoping to put a scallop trip together out to the parking lot or something in that vicinity. We have 2 maybe 3 for this trip, we will need to have a full boat to make this trip work. Call the shop to schedule any diving day and if your interested in the scallop trip think about what day you are available and we'll try to make it happen. Thursdays and Saturdays will probably be a problem with a scallop trip as these days have historically filled quickly for local reef hunting or digging for artifacts. Hope to see you out there for some North Atlantic fun! Viz, Temp and Hunting (edibles and artifacts) have been awesome!
