Wednesday 8/10 Afternoon Trip
We would have 2 long time friends of the boat joining a new group of divers for some afternoon fun. The wind was blowing pretty darn good at maybe a solid 20 knots consistent, but coming from the west meant we would be staying in tight. Within the new group of 4 we had a first time Jersey diver, so an intact Tug would be our destination today. After a little later start than we had hoped we were on site in no time at all. Surface viz was non-existent at maybe 1 ft, but cleared nicely at 30 ft and below to about 20 ft at the bottom. Temps were still running in the 70's at the surface and about 55* on the bottom. A couple Sea Bass and Tog were had, but nothing big. Got 2 in and back at the dock at 830pm (ouch) boat cleaned and readied for Thursday at 1030pm..........so much for Dinner Cruises!
Thursday 8/11
After a couple hour nap, we were at it again. Today had some of our regular hunters aboard so Capt. Bill would be running south to see what the day held for us. The first stop would be the Vivian. With a ripping surface current we did not have much luck getting tied into this wreck. We instead made for another wreck in the vicinity with a little more "meat". As was yesterday there was "no surface viz" but cleared up nicely on the way down to about 20-25 ft. again maybe 55* on the bottom. A lot of bugs were spotted, but you know the ones with 2 zip code holes. The haul today would be a couple Fluke to about 4 lbs, a couple smaller Sea Bass and 3 bugs, but nothing big. One of the divers said that if we were to return here tomorrow he would sign up again................Back at the dock just after noon. Yeeha!
Friday 8/12
King Konger and friends, and the Thursday diver aboard....so we know we are hunting for one thing or another! Capt Bill would again go south to a site we have not visited before.....WOW, is all I have to say!.......Same ole, same ole bad surface vis clearing at 30 ft. As I drop down low and behold a "fluted" anchor about 6 ft high greets me at the bottom.........I'm thinking everyone is gonna love this little baby, so I tie into it.......no missing this little beauty! What a beautiful wreck many hundreds of feet long and very very low lying. Around the anchor is some small machinery, most likely a donkey boiler for the winch. Many fluke to 6.5 lbs would be had here. This wreck will most certainly be visited again in the not so distant future. As our Thursday diver is mostly a bug guy another trip to Thursdays wreck would be warranted. We again would load up on Fluke and another whopper Tog by Konger (10 lbs) about 4 more bugs would be had but again nothing big. Another fine day of diving and back at around noon.
Saturday 8/12
Capt Bill would keep todays destination a secret till much later in the day....so much so he electrical taped the GPS to keep us in the dark. Subtle hints like 6 miles from the inlet.......2+ miles from the Delaware and things of that nature would prompt all aboard to rack their brains as to our destination. Coming up on site we would fine much improved surface viz 30+ ft down to about 20 ft down, stay bad to about 50 ft and then clear again on the bottom. Water much warmer today 78* at the surface and about 57* on the bottom.....first tropicals I've seen this season with a couple Sargent Majors around the bottom of the boat. Bottom was kinda silty but if you stayed up it was very nice viz maybe 30 ft. Very high walls, both sides and a low lying keel led to chain pile all the way to the rudder. Surprised at no Fluke as there were many boats around us fishing for Fluke (maybe the silty bottom) a couple Sea Bass and a very nice Tog would be boated as well as one bug....many bugs spotted but 2 zip code holes were the order today. Capt would finally fess up where we were and as it turns out it was a bucket list wreck for Gillman.......after all the requests he didn't even know it was his desired wreck.......guess he's gotta get more info in the future! Another fine day on Lake Atlantic.
