On Saturday, the RV Garloo set "sail" at 4am for the distant Sommerstad (Virginia) wreck. Still early in the season, Capt. Hank was anxious to kick start with a bang. We arrived on site at about 8:30am, in sporty seas, Tim and I were tapped to set the hook. We were bounced around quite a bit while Hank zeroed in on the exact spot, and the shot line was dropped. I splashed first, followed by Tim, and utilized the Viper and Minnus scooters to plow our way to the ball in pretty rough stuff. All was calm ten feet down for us as we set the anchor and sent up the cups. Immediately I could hear the roar of the Garloo's engines as they motored over to pick up the ball and tie off. Max depth 167' accounting to my Hammerhead Tri-Mix eCCR handsets. Water temps were in the 50's, I was glad to have the DUI "Blue Heat" undergarments, which I used at 50% heating for the duration of the dive. Tim, on OC doubles, had a run time of one hour, and I stayed 100 minutes. It appears we tied into the region that once was the bow, and I ran my wreck reel to the propellor and then turned back. The vis was between 50'-25', in the different layers. The ocean appeared at the surface almost as if we were off of Hatteras, beautiful, and just as rough! By all means, please run a wreck reel if you are to explore this wreck, it is very broken up and not easy to navigate if you have not seen it before. After an exciting first dive, Hank elected to pull anchor and head home as the seas were kicking up more as the afternoon progressed. We made it back to port at 6pm. All was good! Dive Safe and often!
