Finding this Facebook page was poignantly the bittersweet paradoxical. On one hand, it was fantastic to see the faces in the photographs from those most formative years, however, on the other hand it was dramatically tragic to read the reports of all these precious gems from my childhood to have trudged off this mortal coil, in the brief time it took to read these posts. I feel (notice how I used the emotional feel, instead of think John; :-)) it was like I lost you ALL in one cataclysmic disaster! Frank Catania, Bob Gregory, Patty Gemellaro, Brian, Dion Sexton, all gone at once, leaving me unable to even recover from the first loss, as I read further, to have yet another piece of my heart removed, without the benefit of anesthesia.
As with most of the painful experiences in my life I have no one to blame but myself, had I checked in earlier, I may have reconnected, and made the statements to these people that needed to be said... could have, would have, should have,... the penalty for procrastination.
Hoping to learn from this egregious error, I cannot allow one more day to transpire…
I wish to address ALL of those staff who during the course of those ten short months, played such an integral part in my life! John and Milt, I do not believe any of us can fully express their gratitude for the skill-set you have provided us with. We have, every one of us, benefitted from YOUR vision! The concept of a place like MT, and then successfully establishing a curriculum that could coexist within the Brentwood high school educational system was beyond genius. Laura Morelli, Peter Murray, Johanna Fogliano, Milton Siler, Ken Moss, Joseph Trusso, John Sheehan, Vita, Corad Follansbee, and Carl Fogliano, as well as my Sifu, Professor John Sherin, there are no terms or measurements that can accurately describe the impact you made ON ALL OF OUR LIVES, and by proxy all the lives of the people we encountered, and lives we touched, for the remainder of our lives thereafter... (With respect to myself, those people in my life might be looking to come after you, and KICK your asses) like the expanding concentric circles created by that one stone of vision, thrown into the center of the pool of civilization. …“Circle of fifths”, if you will.
It is 2014, Thirty-eight years have passed and yet there is not a day that goes by that I am not considering or using Abraham Maslow’s. Pyramid of “hierarchy of needs” in my own patient evaluations/teaching. I've read several posts from people who state they remember incidents that occurred in that annex on Paradise Lane more vividly than they remember what they had for breakfast, WHAT does that tell you ladies and gentlemen of the MT faculty? The crucial perspective that you injected, still courses through my VEINS, rushing though my heart, hundreds if not thousands of times each day. Waxing poetically, and borrowing from Paul Simon's lyrics "left its seeds while I was sleeping, and the vision that was planted in my brain still remains"...
Now it is time that we are all entering, or basking in, I believe what Eriksson would define in his notorious "Stages of Psychosocial Development", as “Ego Integrity versus Despair”. And I wish to convey to you that you had BETTER NOT waste even a nano-second doubting the MONUMENTAL contributions YOU MADE, and mindset altering grasp of reality, you initiated on ALL of our lives!!! Mere words cannot describe, and fail to do justice to what you have accomplished!!! You are to be lauded in the hallowed halls of Education; Certainly there can be no higher calling... Rest Easy Professors (although, I know you never will, I suppose one of the curses of a true genius, never satisfied with the way things are, always something you can “tweak”, or make a minor adjustment to improve its function) and I'm pretty sure you understand, that this is absolutely not the last you've heard from me... KUDOS to each and every one of you Thank You, Thank You, Thank You... :-) YOU transformed our lives, and GAVE us direction, WE are your OPUS…….
Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have.
