I couldn't remember what I wore on July 4, 1976, but I know I wore summer clothes, that's all. A pair of shorts and a top, most likely. (and likely a swimming suit outfit if the family and I went to swim or be on a boat). I would need to look at the family albums any picture dating back to that day or thereabouts and see what I wore then. 🤔
Although, I remember some people wore what you described. Top with colors and bottom (pants or skirt) with opposite colors. Red on white and vice versa.
