At the time of Charles and Diana's visit to Wales, she was the first Princess of Wales in 71 years. To say that her visit was a success is quite an understatement.
The first day of the tour was October 27, 1981. It was windy and chilly.
I love this close-up picture. This was one of the first wide-brimmed hats that Diana wore. It was previously worn to the Soames wedding when she was Lady Diana Spencer, but it was updated with a band of green for the Welsh tour.
Again, it was a windy day.
The Prince and Princess of Wales seated on the dias at Caenarfon Castle in Caenarfon. It was a midaeval fortress. I think that I've seen pictures of Diana wearing gloves on this occasion, but this was before she put them on.
Looking rather vulnerable in the crowd. This was part of why people loved her.
This elderly gentleman is overjoyed to meet his Prince and Princess. There's a story about one old man who shook hands with Diana, burst into tears, composed himself, and burst into tears again. Perhaps this was the man. I don't know. Diana had a remarkable effect on people from the very beginning.
If there was an evening engagement on this first day in Wales, it must have been a private one. Hopefully there was a well-deserved rest instead.
