I believe it started after Prince Charles married again. When Charles is not present, his second wife becomes the 3rd lady of the land after the Queen and Princess Anne in protocol at official events. Before Charles and Diana's divorce was finalized, when Charles was not present, Diana was 3rd lady after the Queen and the Queen Mother but before Princess Anne. When Charles was present, Diana still was behind the Queen and the Queen Mother but she was ranked in protocol before Princess Anne. Wasn't it?
Now when Prince Charles is not around, Camilla is ranked in protocol after the Queen and Princess Anne. When he's around, Camilla stands between the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex and the Countess of Wessex and then Princess Anne. Right?
