The Saphire Skies has shorter stiffer leaves than the Blue Velvet and more old hardy _-10 onnthe Saphire and 0 on the Blue Velvet. The leaves are Blue/Grey on the Blue Velvet and allegedly powder Blue/Silver on the Saphire Skies.Looking through pictures on the net, They both vary Thanks

I think there are several versions of Yucca Rostrata. Off hand I remember these, Y rostrata z5b upwards Y rostrata 'Sapphire Skies' z5b upwards Y rostrata 'Blue-haired Lady' z5b upwards Y rostrata 'linearifolia' z7 upwards Yucca Treculeana has several versions also.

Its a pup from the mother plant I took over a decade ago. I cant believe I was able to get a pup. Its a little larger than it looks, almost 4' tall. I first heard about the hardiness of Y elata when an old one died at Opryland in Nashville years ago. It perished in a huge flood that covered it for over a month or so. It had been there for over 25 years. They really are the 'needle palm' of trunking desert yuccas and very hardy. Glad to hear your growing one. The dirt spot to its left in the photo is the 'burn off' of my Pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana). The wind was mild and didn't think it would scorch the Elata by burning it instead of clipping it down but it did a little. It will color back up by summer.

I was into yuccas and bananas way before palms (35 years ago) and your comments bring back a funny incident. I had a Yucca Treculeana out in the yard, a car came to a screeching halt and a little man gets out and says you have a Sabal Palmetto from Florida growing here. I told him sir, its actually a yucca tree from the southwest and he said, don't tell me, I've lived in Florida. I showed him some others and he finally caught my drift (back in the day, Home Depot sold Torreyi and Treculeana with 3 or 4 feet of trunk ($75) with a plant guarantee of one year. While hardy, they are not Elata and back then I didnt know that much about protecting them. I thought a berm was enough but leaned water and desert yuccas dont mix well
