Cable ties & Bungee cords great help in protection modes Posted by Rob N TN on November 5, 2025, 1:43 pm If you want to gather fronds together use Cable Ties. The old tried and true Bungee Cords work well too. Both are fast to work with. I've been using Cable Ties (get some long ones) for 3 years.

I've noticed in the store I bought them were various prices. They all are about the same vs brand. These are 30 inches and likely too much jajaja but I got them anyways 20 pcs for $11. Try Dollar Tree and other dollar stores for better prices. I've seem them very inexpensive in some places. Im tying up fronds today Tom and stringing lights incase I need a throw over for the upcoming "who knows what weather." Hope you have a good weekend amico.

I guess I'm very lucky not having a frost or freeze yet but that's coming to a sudden halt in 2 or 3 days. Around October 8th is my usual date. Its going to rain tomorrow and Im taking advantage of this nice warm day to get ready. I don't see how you keep up but you always do and your palms look awesome. Thanks.

I cant believe how fast you can tie up or release the fronds and it doesn't mark up the petioles at all and you can tighten up the bundle as much as you need. I will tie up the fronds, string the lights leaving a gathering in the crown and mulch later. Critters (field mice etc.) will get into your mulch around here if you mulch before cold hits. In December-January I will have mulched by then and usually start wrapping the trunks in frost cloth. Still no boxes here (you would think I've learned by now) just a throw over tarp. My only saving grace is a prayer and we most always get above freezing in winter. I will be using a thermocube this year since I might not be home all of winter. Thanks Keith and take care.

Those are great ideas to bind up fronds. The big hvac zip ties are nice and you can carefully release them and reuse them too. I used the ratchet straps from Harbor Freight and they worked pretty well too. You just crank them down tight and don’t have to struggle with getting them tight first by hand. I still have not planted any hardy palms at my new place. I’ve got some Sabal Lous and McCurtain strapleafs that I’m gonna get in the ground some day.

Thanks for sharing this. I was hoping my post would get some people sharing although there is some good ideas out there anyway. Glad to hear you have some sabals growing for the future. Just when you think your in palm pause, a palm appears. Your climate is very good with trunking desert yuccas, don't forget to plan for one. Thanks friend.

Find a decent size Keith, not to short or too long. The long ones might be a good choice for a Robusta or palmetto. I'm using bungees and they were much easier to handle. Keith after a few days its looking like an improvement in the weather. around 70* next weekend. It's 39* and rain showers here currently. today cloudy 49°25° Rain/Snow then Snow Showers 80% flurries Mon Light afternoon snow 33°19° 50% flurries Tue Mostly sunny 46°21°20% chance flurries Wed Sunny 60°35° Thu Mostly cloudy 63°40° Fri sunny 70°49° Sat sunny 71°53° Sun Light rain 66°45° My harsh lows are normally seen after Thanksgiving so winter is about 3 weeks early.
