Trunking Sabal
Posted by Tom in PA on September 23, 2025, 7:15 pm
This Sabal continues to retain old leaf bases. It really looks to be ealry in the trunking phase. Any thoughts on if this is true are welcome.

Tony Avent sent me a Sabal Birmingham before he listed them in his magazine, way back in 2001. They are notorious for being slow. Mine was trunking in 2006 and with large fans. It must have loved that little microclimate it was growing in. It is possible for sabals to move fast. I never protected it and just pulled a tall table over it to deflect winter precip. I left it behind and the new owner let it die. AJ has a birmy that seems to have grown quickly also and his Sabal Louisiana (they are just beautiful) He has a fine sabal palmetto too. I think Kevin has a sabal palmetto doing the same thing. Some manure tea (go out to the fields amico) and give it some of that next spring. That will make them jump . Thanks for posting that Tom.
