Crape and Pines Posted by Jason Western PA on September 4, 2025, 7:46 pm This crape has been doing great for me. I will cut it halfway down and with will grow 4-5 feet next year. I love the color. My small loblolly I planted in early summer. My Japanese black pines are doing great. One has two pinecones. I got these in the outer banks and didn't know if they would make it here. This is my bigger loblolly. It was an experiment in the woods behind my house. It's gone through two winters and is doing great. It's about 6 feet tall now. We got some rain today. We sure needed it. The leaves are starting to turn here because of the really dry August.

Yeah, most of the pines, that grow in the South, are also hardy, zones 5 and 6. I think the Japanese Black Pine is at least z6 hardy. Even Longleaf Pine, rated z7 hardy, are hardy in z6. Kinda dy here, too. Although I just got a half inch of rain, yesterday, the next 10 days currently show no rain. September and sometimes, October, can be dry. I don't like using the hose for watering, but do so every 4 days, if there is no rain. The good part, is that cooler fall air temps bring longer times for the ground to driy out, again, after a rain.
