Odd Elephant Ear Behavior? Posted by Jake- Morristown, TN on August 17, 2025, 9:46 am I’ve grown several varieties of colocasias over the years and I’ve never seen them spread not in the ground. There are two that have popped up where older leaves stems are attached. The rest are coming up around the main plant in dirt. I bought two of these tubers as ‘Black Magic’. I’ve never had a ‘Black Magic’ get as large as this on or have shiny leaves like this one. The other one I have looks more like the ‘Black Magic’ that I’ve grown before and is half the size of this one despite being the same size as planted and getting the same amount of water and sunlight. Do you think this one is ‘Black Magic’? hershey library

If this one truly is 'Black Magic', I have never had one thrive like this one has. The other one is seriously half the height and the leaves are maybe 1/4 of the size of this one and aren't shiny. It is a beauty.

Though it may be trying to revert with that smaller plant growing out of it. The leaves on the small one look too green for Black Magic. Mine start out greenish on the new growth but darken as the leaves mature. What do the new leaves look like on the bigger plant as they start emerging? Darker than the small plants leaves or just as green? I think it likes where you have it, whatever it is! They do not like a lot of direct sunlight but will get huge in no time.

Since I haven't been able to garden any this season I did place some Black Hawaiians,Colocasia esculenta 'Rhubarb'and Colocasia red stems in a 15g tub of water and they have thrived and grown all summer. Never got them potted or in the ground. I hope to pot them up before Thanksgiving and put them in the basement until next season.
