Gardenias Posted by KrisOK on August 6, 2025, 12:44 am Anyone tried one of the several newer Hardy gardenia varieties? I bought a ScentAmazing to kill - I mean try - this year. It’s a single type bloom, looks a lot like a Kleim’s Hardy. I think I have killed everyone that is supposed to be hardy LOL. I’m not actually doing the deed, it’s winter. I think they cannot tolerate any kind of extended sub 32F stretch. I had a Chuck Hayes make it one winter but it just malingered and died the next summer. Frostproof, Kleims, Snow in Summer, Crown Jewel, August Beauty, just to name a few. I keep trying them, chasing my Eleanor. Maybe this’ll be the one! Zone 7 hardy? :

I am growing a variety right now that blooms all season. It’s in the ground and I’m going to try to dig it up in the fall. How are your palms doing?

I am a sucker for that smell though, and the pretty foliage and flowers is nice too. I’ll keep trying them LOL but I suspect it is just out of reach for a Z7 with any kind of freezing duration. We sold our house a couple years ago and moved, still here in Oklahoma. I drive by occasionally and everything I can see looks good. The new owner does not protect anything. I was down to Sabal minors and Needles when I sold. My big trachies bought it many years back, we just got too cold for my protection method. They got kinda big to protect, too. I promised the wife I’d plant “nothing like the old house” and have stuck to it mostly LOL. I’ve got a potful of Louisiana sabals that I brought and intend to plant. I’ve got a Faxon yucca in ground, and a Yucca rostrata that’ll go in ground in the spring after we build a new bed out front. I brought a pup off my Crinum “Sangria” too that is putting on size. My Chicago fig is huge in just two summers of growth. I’ll just have to Hardy Palm vicariously through all you guys! What Gardenai do you have that you’re gonna dig up? I might have to try that one, too.

You had some that were pretty big at your old place. You have to plant at least one 😂. I’m not sure what variety of gardenia I have. I’m pretty sure I threw the tag away. It is from Lowe’s. They had a bunch of them in the spring. I’ve also thought of trying to put net lights on them with a thermo cube and burlap on top of that. The unknown for me is how they respond to being dug up. Hopefully whatever I try will work. It’s a great bloomer.

I do miss my Sabals and plan on guerilla gardening a few and hope they get big before the wife notices. My McCurtains were almost as big as my Louisiana and were much hardier. I think I dug up a gardenia at the old place and potted it. It didn’t love it but it didn’t die if I remember. It kinda struggled till the next winter got it. They are just too fickle!
