Notice the family resemblance?

About twenty years ago, I got seeds this tropical form of Morning Glory, from Park Seed. Hard to believe that a Morning Glory, usually planted as an annual vine, could survive that long in a container. Well actually, I had been growing it in a large 16 inch plastic pot. The vines were trained to grow up bamboo stakes. Well, the pot, after so many years, literally, cracked apart, and had to be discarded. I originally intended to move the rootball, in one piece, to the new pot, thinking the plant was rootbound...but it wasn't. The "rootball" was nothing more than a cluster of tubers. So, what I wound up doing was transplant tubers, from one pot to the other.
CHECK OUT THE TUBERS !!
Not hard to see that Morning Glory is a close relative of SWEET POTATOES. In fact, the botanical name of this variety of Morning Glory, is Ipomea andersonii. The botanical name of the edible form of sweet potato, is Ipoemea batatas....
Fred, I had no idea that the roots of this plant would look so much like sweet potatoes. Since Morning Glories are usually grown as annuals, in temperate climates, and die in their first winter in the ground, their root systems generally don't form tubers, especially, this large, in a season. These roots are over a decade in forming.
