It's that Time of Year Posted by Alvin, z6 on June 17, 2025, 10:30 pm The annual Lilac Festival, on Mackinaw Island, ended a few days ago. It is almost time for the annual National Cherry Festival, in Traverse City. It happens in late June-early July. Michigan leads the nation, in tart cherry production. That said, the sweet cherries are ripening, in my garden. I wish I had a ladder tall enough to harvest them. Actually, this is the first year, in the last several, in which cherries have stayed on the tree, this long. Birds usually grab them, as soon as they BEGIN to turn red. In addition, the weather is often rainy at ripening time, causing remaining fruit to get moldy. I know Michigan must be very beautiful there. We had a terrible windstorm last night, winds of 55 and 60 mph. Thousands were out of power. When it it the noise was so loud. Dorothy said is that an airplane? About that time it slammed the house. Right scary. I ran onto back deck to take down the umbrella, the table where I have a lot of agave sitting when I got out there, the umbrella had picked up and was except the very tip of it was up in the magnolia tree. I was able to get that down. Then the rain started. I went back into the house just. It would’ve turned that table over with all the Agave was on. The magnolia tree holding the top of the umbrella so Itcouldn’t go any higher Kathy umbrella from flying from out of the neighborhood.

I plan on keeping the fruit trees I've planted recently, at a more manageable size, both for ease of harvesting, and throwing netting over, to guard from birds and other fruit-eating critters. Sorry to hear about the bad storms. I'm guessing the rain is probably welcome, though, in hot weather. I can imagine tree limbs could fall, in such high winds.

You can take a ferry ride from Mackinaw City, to Mackinaw Island. Temps are comfortable, up there, too, +in summer. Horse and buggy rides are reminiscent of the Amish. Mackinaw is world famous for their fudge, as much as the annual Lilac Festival. Lots of varieties of the sweet treat. A nice place to visit.
