Palms lost this winter Posted by Keith N. IL on June 5, 2025, 8:06 pm My Butia and my Jubaea didn’t survive. I did replace the Butia. Mt needle didn’t survive. I didn’t protect so my bad. I wanted to see how tough it was. My Vulcano looked good initially but has succumbed to rot from cold damage. At least it’s still alive with pups growing. My Sabal rosei is hanging on. We will see. Here is a picture of my Vulcano from earlier this year. thumbnail maken online

Well I lost a needle palm (I can't grow these things like some folks) and a small sago palm. I guess it was too exposed and not a very large plant. I had no idea sagos can spear pull like other palms. Kevin seTN

Illinois Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano' Posted by Rob on June 6, 2025, 12:12 pm, in reply to "Palms lost this winter" Well that was certainly my favorite palm on this forum. It survived many years and brought a lot of joy seeing it, Sorry Keith. Rot and freeze damage has always been a problem for all of us in higher elevations and latitudes. I always had hope for that species since it's likely not a full zone out of our range. (1). Keith I lost a Sabal Palmetto but not from the cold but by my dog. All winter she would run over it with her chain. She finally killed it. (2). Although none died, my Sabal Minors looked worse than they ever have after winter. They are blooming and seeding now but they looked rough. (3). After loosing my Butia and Sago last year I decided to give it a rest and decide if I want to try boxed protection. * (have you seen AJ's Butia? WOW It's a monster. ?si=yeEsnRn6e2cHByRB AJ only lives 70 air-miles WSW of me but thats a big deal. (105 highway miles) The Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano' does have an hardiness value of a Butia so it was definitely a bad winter. Please remember, Its common for that palm to return from the roots after trunk loss Patience is Key: It takes time for palms to recover from freeze damage. Don't be discouraged if you don't see new growth immediately. Some palms may take months or even over a year to show signs of recovery. I learned that from seeing my Sabal Palmetto try to recover year after year because of my dog. I was lucky my Windmill and a Wagnerianus lived. My Windmill almost defoliated but I tell you Keith, w/ just minis and a throw over tarp for ice events, the Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is about as hardy as we can get in z6b. A Needle palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrix) casualty is more common than one might think. I've lost many in years past. I didn't know you had to protect them but I've heard gardeners even in Alabama and Georgia have lost Needle Palms before. Keith, after growing everything from Bananas to Christmas Palms, and swearing to never try again, it's futile. Plants are worth another try. My nephew just planted a new camellia for me (fall bloomer) and have planted a couple of 3g windmills. I'd like to plant a 2g Washingtonia robusta but they can be iffy surviving winter when small. They take protection well when larger, 3 or 5 gallon. Thanks Keith.

I used to get discouraged from losing palms, however now it’s just part of the experience of growing palms in Zone 5. My Vulcano will need a smaller protection box this winter so that’s a positive. The pups are growing fast. I will have to decide how many to keep. AJ’s palms are awesome and so huge. Looks like he should be in Florida. Rob post an update on your plants when you can, I would love to see them. Thanks Keith

The liver and Bone Marrow has to be kept healthy long term. As long as they can cut it out and I can get around, I hope to be near normal by fall. Thanks for the kind words friend. It sucks getting old, said an old palm grower.
