Trichocereus in bloom Posted by Fred SC on May 4, 2025, 5:26 pm It has been blooming for about four days the blooms just stay out about a day and a half. There are some types, that are quite hardy. I think the Cactus Man, and the Denver Cactus Co., both in Colorado, has some "Rocky Mountain hardy" strains.

It’s a beauty! If I were able to grow it again, I would make sure that I put some plastic sheet , plexiglass, old window or something up above so couldn’t touch it in the winter time.

Soil froze deeper than the 4 foot norm. Our climate is much different than yours so probably different ones will be hardy for you. For us, a general rule is to try to source plants from east of the continental divide and preferably from out on the Great Plains where there is more moisture and more abrupt temperature changes. Kelly at Cold Hardy Cactus and Donnie at Ethical Desert are two great sources. Need to be on email list to be notified when new plants are available. Just ordered two of Kelly's hardiest selections a few minutes ago to repopulate part of our arid berm. Plus he has a sale on echinocereus at the moment. One of these was a survivor last winter and the other sounded promising. EC071: Echinocereus reichenbachii v perbellus Red Top Form EC041: Echinocereus triglochidiatus Rio Grande Co, CO form We give no cover so the cactus have to deal with our highly variable moisture situation. Good luck Certain Opuntias and chollas are of course the hardiest, then: Escobaria missouriensis and vivipara Pediocactus simpsonii with great drainage Ecninocereus viridiflora E. Reichenbachii, perbellus, etc. E. Triglochidiatus, coccineus, etc. All of the above are strongly locality dependent, with some locations taking cold and wet far better than others. Some very interesting man-made hybrids out there also. Lloyd
