First flowers of spring - Pediocactus Posted by Lloyd IA on April 19, 2025, 7:27 pm Most of your gardens have been blooming for a while, but here is our first of the season. Remember that our average last frost date is still three weeks away. These are Pediocactus simpsonii var. minor originating from the mountains west of Denver. Two years outside with absolutely no protection and doing great. And last winter was tough with absolutely no protective snow cover until March. I might hand pollinate some of these since there are no insects around yet.

Would like to find some from other regions with different flower colors. West of the continental divide the flowers tend towards yellow or white. I might as well start some seed just to spread more around since they do well on their own here. They are more of an alpine rather than a desert plant. They are slow growing in their early years though.

Generally in our berms we run about 90% river rock (ranges from large pea gravel to a bit over an inch) and 10% topsoil. When it is cold we flash freeze so need really open drainage. Sometimes water spilled on concrete will immediately freeze into a lump instead of spreading out.
