In My Garden Today

While out in the yard, doing some spring cleaning up, I examined the wood on my Crape Myrtle. it looks good, right now. Despite having a -3F minimum, for the second year in a row, the cold was more enduring, this winter, than last. The cold was continuous throughout January and February. Last year, I had no stem die-back. I'll see if I'm lucky again, this year...
I lifted the Rubbermaid garbage can, with a rose cone inside it, to check on my Redneck Rhody, Daphniphyllum macropodum. I wanted to see how it fared, after my z6, -3F minimum. Redneck Rhody is rated z7 hardy. Anybody else growing Redneck Rhody?
I lifted the styrofoam box from my Wire Netting Bush, Corokia cotoneaster, to see how it fared, after a z6 winter. It seems to have kept just about all its tiny leaves. Wire Netting Bushes are rated z8a hardy. Anybody else growing this "Down Under"-native plant?...
I lifted the cone from my YEW PINE, Podocarpus macrophyllus, to see how it fared after my z6 minimum winter. Yew pines are rated z8 hardy. Anybody else growing Yew Pines?...
I lifted the cone from my ALPINE TEA TREE, Leptospermum namadgiensis, to see how it fared after my -3F minimum winter. Tea trees are native to Australian mountains. So, are also from 'Down Under". Anybody else growing any Aussie plants?
The FEBRUARY DAPHNE, Daphne mezureum, is blooming now! Blooms after February, here. What a beautiful scent these flowers have. In Greek mythology, Apollo was one-sidedly infatuated by Daphne. Bucking against his advances, Daphne prayed to the gods. They answered her prayers, by turning her into a laurel tree. Anybody else growing any of these fragrant shrubs. These blooms will be followed by red berries, in summer, that vanish somehow, by fall...

Alvin, the February Daphne is blooming nicely. I’m sure it smells wonderful. I only grow one Australian plant and that’s the Callestemon citrinus commonly named bottle brush. Looks like for the most part your plants came for the winter pretty well certainly it’s a harsh win for you. Here is a close up of Bottlebrush bloom.i
Thanks, Fred. The scent of Daphne is as nice as that of Tea Olive (Osmanthus fragrans) or Night Jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum). These are two other fragrant plants I grow. All who read this, should be growing them, if they like fragrant subtropicals.
I have a Callistemon, you reminded me, I should check on. My plant didn't flower, for its first time, last year, until summer. I am glad to be trying it here, in SE Lower Michigan.
Check out this collard green plant, that made it through my -3F winter. They are very hardy plants. The only drawback, in overwintered collard plants, is that, in their second year (being biennials), produce little in the way of greens, but focus on flowering, producing seeds, and dying...
Thanks, Jake. Daphne mezureum is one of the hardiest, earliest in the season to flower shrubs, for the North. The plants are hardy throughout z5 (down to -20), yet, they are not easily found. I got my plants, years ago, from Wayside Gardens.
I agree, Keith. March and April are roller coaster months, as far as temps go, in this part of the country, with occasional flurries, even into April. It's great to have things blooming weeks before the lawn needs cutting, or dandelions bloom, in force.
