Three cheers for another Arctic plunge... Posted by Kevin seTN on February 15, 2025, 10:37 am Who's ready and with me? Lol. Sick of this crap, I know it's only February but... I may get snow and a low teen temperature next week. It wouldn't bother me as much if things weren't beginning to bloom and pop out of the ground, etc... Spring peepers are already doing their thing too. Buckle up gents. Gonna apparently be another (quick) bumpy ride. Kevin seTN

Daffodils, Creeping Phlox and other spring flowers are out. Yesterday, on my way to gym, I noticed a Magnolia Stellata in full bloom yesterday. Aoynof Css as mellow j as Monica’s are still blooming.

Alvin, we are up in the northwest corner near the South Dakota border. The dry corner of Iowa, which helps a lot with the desert and alpine plants.

My palms look like they went through a z6 winter instead of a z7b.I have come to the realization that my cold windy z7b is not hospitable enough for cold hardy Trachycarpus palms. Thay all fried .I'm not going to build insulated telehpone booths over them to protect them. If I had to do it over again, I would have stuck with needle palms , Sabal Louisianas and my favorite trunking Yucca Rostratas .No Winter worries and they look good in the spring. I have also become fond of growing fresh figs from trees.Anyone interested in growing fig trees even colder zones , look up Ross Raddi the fig boss from Philly and The millenial gardner from SE NC for some great informational videos on how to grow fig trees in ground or in containers no matter where you live.If you have never eaten a fresh fig off the tree, you don;t know what you're missing. They're nature's candy box

I don't want phone booths either, or the time to fool with all that. Plus what happens when there's a power outage on a very bad cold night. Needle palms are very nice and yucca rostratas are one of the few yuccas I'd be proud to have. I like that millennial gardener for his citrus videos. I've had fresh figs off the tree and as good as the first few were, I didn't care for the third and fourth, etc... but that's just me. Hopefully we are all heading for a nice warmup in a few days. They say figs aren't as good as they will be in a few years after planted.I have very old Celeste,my favorite and I bought a Black Celeste ( hard to find) and I got an Italian 258 , millenials favorite , fastest ,growing and best producing. I also bought a Smith.TX BA1( cold hardy Smith) Violette De Bourdeaux,Desert King, Black Maderia an LSU Tiger and Purple,Little Ruby,Chicago Hardy, White Marseilles and a few more. I guess you could say I like them and went overboard buying them.
