Probably killed them by letting them dry out instead of the cold by the look of the leaves. Soaked them in during October but no precip since.

You don't want the roots wet during extreme cold, but killing them by desiccation isn't good either. I have a bad habit of killing small potted palms by treating them as agaves. When succulents need water they show the signs and say "if you don't water me within a couple months I will be unhappy". As soon as a small potted palm shows leaf drying it says "too late, I died".

needle news Posted by Rob N TN on January 29, 2025, 3:47 pm, in reply to "Re: Needle" Keith if your needle survives this event (and I dont see why it wont) I dont think it will need protection in the future but when temps start falling below z5, I would consider throwing a blanket over it. Wouldn't hurt to throw a mini light net over it too. Sounds like a lot of work but mine seems to have increased hardiness in age. Those mini light nets are used to drape over a bush for decoration. You got this. Looks like AJ and Kevin will hit 70* by Sunday if not sooner and into next week. February is truly winter here but ole man winter may be on the way out. BTW - never had any long term affect with snow loads on the needle

Re: needle news Posted by Keith N. IL on January 29, 2025, 8:21 pm, in reply to "needle news" Good idea Rob. Something quick and simple and easy to remove. I saw the frost line is still 12 inches deep hopefully the warmer weather eliminates that. That may have a bigger impact on the roots.

In my experience Needles have the most cold hardy foliage. Just watch for spear pull in the spring. I’ll spray the crowns with fungicide in the spring and might even during the current thaw.
