morning walk Posted by Jason Western PA on January 26, 2025, 9:41 am I took a walk around the yard this morning checking on cold damage after our -10F low. Edith Bogue has some slight bronzing. Japanese black pines look good. Loblolly pines look great. A southern magnolia I got from TYTY nursery years ago that I planted in the woods behind the house just laughed at the cold. That thing is unbelievable. Oak leaf holly has some bronzing. I did not take tarps off BBB mags to see them. Fingers crossed. Robs yuccas he gave me are solid and do great. long leaf seedlings I have in the garden seem to be fine. I put stakes in the ground and covered them with a canvas tarp. Other than that all seems ok. Bring on SPRING. Any videos for spring predictions?

I did cover the Butia with cloth for a few nights. It has one frond that looks damaged but otherwise is unscathed, I am Thankful for that. I have two Sedeveria that look totally scalded. My Graptopetylms, Echeveria ‘topsyvturvy’ , and Sedeveria ‘Vera Higgins’ and two other succulent hybrids are unscathed, All Trachycarpus, Sabl minor , cactus varieties are good. My Artichoke looks good so far. I am glad s as ll your trees and shff r ubs are doing well. The temps for next ten days here has lows in 50’s and highs in 60’s. This is a little above average , actually. Spring is just around the corner. I hope that darn groundhog there in PA knows what he is predicting and predicts early spring.

Your Bogue is likely in a more exposed spot, than your TyTy Mag, in the woods. Oak Leaf holly is similar in hardiness to Aucuba, which oftens suffers damage, at such a temp, if not covered, and are both come through winter better, at temps above zero, or z7 minimums. The last time I got to -10, my Mimosa, already a late budder (full leaf, here in mid-May, usually), was not in full leaf here, until June.

Havent heard about them in years. Many people say visit in person if you buy from them. . . Your Southern Magnolia didn't care where he came from. Hope those yuccas give you a good run friend . No spring videos yet but hopefully Ken, Alex, Barry, Fred, The Maryland Mafia and Cindy will mention it. There is a big wind storm that's supposed to sweep the country soon, I hope its only rain here. We are still in a bad drought. Looks like it's dry near you as well. Link: USA drought monitor 'click'

They were saw palmettos and were definitely not healthy when I received them. They were in a burlap leaf enclosure filled with straw. Back then my knowledge of cold hardiness and reputable nurseries was not good. In future years I started buying from better sources and started planting Sabal varieties that are still in my landscape today. Live learn and learn 😃.

The southern mad doesn't get much more protection. The woods is really open in the spot. It seems my mimosa from Rob is way stringer than ones I've gotten around here.
