Morning Posted by Jason Western PA on January 23, 2025, 8:18 pm I hit -10F yesterday morning. Pittsburgh had hits coldest low in 10 years also. They hit -9F Luckily it didn't stay. I was not able to see the palms in D.C. this weekend, the fencing was up. Maybe this summer. Sure has been a cold January.

Probably would have gotten colder, if there was more than an inch of snow on the ground. Snow pack seems to increase overnight lows. That low is pretty typical (z6b), for here, but I have dipped into the z5b range of between -10 and -15, once or twice, in the last 10 years. Used to fall into that 5b range more often, in the past, though, like when I was a kid.

It felt like minus forty three at my stepdaughters area. It did fall into upper teens here. I don’t think that should cause too much damage. With wind zI think it felt like minus six. It was cold,BRRR! Sorry you did not see palms there in DC. The only plant I worry about is the Butia. I did cover it with cloth when the teens were predicted. It is still covered,. Time will tell.

We met a wonderful family on the metro who we all walked and sat together. The son in-law wants a palm tree so bad. This was after I said I had one. They live in Virginia Beach. I said oh man, you can have one. He doesn't have any land. They loved my pictures of the big palm and bananas. His in-laws live in N.C. who knew all about the hardy bananas. haha We didn't run into one nasty person.
