Jubaea in Siler City, NC Posted by Cindy NC on January 18, 2025, 10:03 pm I was counting years backwards trying to figure out how old this Jubaea is. I think I've had it planted now for 20 years. It was 6 years old when I bought it in Texas, so best guess is that it is 26 years old. What you can't tell from the photo is actual size. The trunk is enormously wide and about 5' tall.

Its a monster and has always adapted well in all the places you've lived. Siler City it is. Maybe one day you can show those other palms. Once you had a farm yard full of those palms. I have no protection on it at the moment, and our lowest low so far was 19F. Tonight may be the lowest, however. Smaller ones will kill over if two zone 7 winters in a row, at least in our area.

I only have 5 Birminghams, 3 tall Trachys, 2 Needles, and the Jubaea plus Butiaxjub. I am a convert to planting Native, mostly to attract more birds and wildlife to the yard. And, it is working. No matter how I look at the palms, they just don't provide much for the birds here, other than a tree to perch/roost on. Nice to look at, but that's about it. Am growing as many native shrubs/trees that provide food for the birds and pollinators. We are big on birding, now. :-)

We have protected it a couple of times for the winter. I was thinking there were others who had large Jubs growing in the SE. I can't remember who they were, and I often wonder how those are doing. I can imagine your place is an urban jungle by now.

Am getting up there in age and don't want to do the winter protection planning anymore. How is your place doing? I imagine you have quite a collection by now.

I've had a few health issues (agent orange) but I've managed to keep a few things going, a few plats of Sabal Minor and one plat from the gardens of the late Mr. Charles Cole who started them nearby when President Kennedy was elected President. We have adopted it as x Tennessee form. also a saw palmetto, a large windmill, an up and coming Waggy, Waggy-Naintal hybrid (if its lived) A Needle palm that's 10' tall and has a girth of about 60' she is a monster but my love is native and SW yuccas. I have a good size blue Rostrata and Y.elata and potted Agaves, Brazilian Furcraeas and trunking native yuccas,camellias and hibiscus. I have a queen palm (big one) and Date but I harvest them in winter and plant again in the spring. Too much work. They will eventually get too tall and about 100 banana trees scattered around. Don't plant them near the house. They try to take over a micro-climate area and they don't need it. basjoo. I would like to find a Orinoco banana. Fruit is good. I also have a large sour orange tree and the fruit is not so good, Thanks Cindy.
