Longleaf Pine and Pygmy Date Palm Posted by Tom in PA on January 16, 2025, 10:30 pm Hope everyone is warm and well. We are in deep freeze that seems like it will never end. Next week we may hit anywhere from -8 to -12 depending on the forecast. If we go past -8 that will be the coldest here since I started growing palms and other subtropicals. I hope we don’t as I don’t think some of my plants will survive or will be killed to the soil line. Man do I hate winter!!! Here is a picture of my Longleaf Pine and potted Pygmy Date. The Longleaf has seen -8 and did well. Not sure how much below that it can take.

Nice little Pygmy palm, growing up in my town at the first Baptist Church. They had a whole row of lonely Leaf palms that ended up being tall as the church or taller is a big big church, but they did a big church expansion and cut them all down.. I had a paper route then and I would have to walk by those every day, I would marvel at the beauty and long needles. . They had a big pecan tree that I would gather pecans from. , they cut it down too, so I was a little upset about the whole thing , lol. I hope your plants will be ok. They say we’re supposed to have the coldest low temperatures in two years they say we might drop to 17 and that’s pretty cold here. I hope my wife ‘s Butia will be OK. I will cover it the best I can. They defoliate at 15, I read. That’s the only plan my I worry about.

Wished I had planted one when you did. Love your dwarf date palm too. So easy to care for. We had snow a week ago today and it's finally melting. It's been so cold here. Expecting snow here Sunday and more Wednesday. My low this coming Monday and Tuesday looks to be 4* or 5* and highs both days around 20* and windchill below zero. I hope my palms can survive it. Sabals and Needles have seen worse I will be north of an unusual southern snow storm that will hit the gulf States and even Florida as South as Gainsville. If it happens, one for the books. I'm getting too old for this. I think Fred needs a neighbor. Haha. Grazi por IL fotos.
