The pic below, was captured with the bloom in bud stage. Looks more like a rose, at this stage, I think. It had many blooms fried a couple weeks back but as of yesterday had dozens of new bloom. They may have fried last night with temps in the mid twenties for several hours. The Sapote foliage is Fabius! I was not familiar with the little Spanish Lime, rarely grown even in tropics is my guess???the custard apple foliage kinda reminds me of several deciduous trees in the Appalachians.

The Spanish lime is native to Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Years ago, when I went to Jamaica, I tried this fruit, for the first time. The fruits are green, and about the size of a cherry plum. Inside, the flesh is a peachy orange color. After peeling a bit of skin off, the whole fruit can be popped into your mouth. While in your mouth, you can suck the flesh from off the pit. The seed takes up most of the space inside the fruit, but the flesh is sweet. These fruits are very similar, in this way, to lychee, and longan. Yeah, Camellias bloom for longer periods, in the Deep South, because cycles are are often interrupted by freeze periods. True roses don't bloom continuously, but usually have multiple bloom cycles, per season, because they put on new foliage, and flower buds. Camellias set just one cycle of flower buds per year, that all open within a few week, indoors, or intermittently, between freezes, until all flower buds have either opened, or froze off.

Although sasanquas do better in full sun, than other Camellia types. They are about as hardy as Trachys, if not grown as deciduous palms. They can lose flower buds in very cold weather, too, if unprotected, in winter.

I have a C. japonica 'Jury's Yellow', a midseason-bloomer (blooms in April), in the ground, for years. It gets protection, but I don't use any heat, and it does great. Just a few Wall o Waters, a rose cone on top, and some concrete blocks. Camellia japonicas prefer part shade. The only full sun this one receives, is in spring, before the big silver maple in my yard gets leaves on it. Camellias seem to enjoy growing under big deciduous trees, towering over them, as understory plants. You probably would have success trying a few Camellias, in or close to your woods. I have several winter-blooming Camellias, kept in pots, because temps simply aren't warm enough for winter blooming Camellias, to flower here. I set one of my spring-blooming Camellias, in the ground, this past season. I'll see if any of the flower buds set this year, open, next spring.
