Some beautiful hardy Agaves in my ysrd Posted by Fred SC on December 19, 2024, 8:42 am The last picture is of Agave salmiana and Agave ‘Mr Ripples’ . I removed them as they got too big for the xeriscspe. A yard man from Nuevo Leon, Mexico . They make pulque from salmiana. He transplanted them in his yard and says they are doing great snd outgrew damages from moving. He loves them. The next to last picture is in back yard. All others are in xeriscspe in front of house. Beautiful agaves. Our hardy ones are doing fine in the single digits so far - EXCEPT some critter has decided to start munching on the leaves. I suspect possums. The agaves, cactus and yucca are the only green things around this time of year except for conifers, so they attract attention from the animals.

Agaves do great here, actually 20 or more, but rarely planted. Same with palms , except in the last few years, more and more palms are showing up, particularly the Sabal palmetto, our state tree. I do love Agaves, as actually more than palms, lol. Sorry the varmits have a taste for your plants. Maybe fence around them?

I love your climate and all the things you can grow. I would relocate and have thought about it often but I feel safer in the Appalachians, away from this crazy world.
