W.Fillabusta Posted by Nick z7b Md on December 11, 2024, 2:39 pm Has any one tried these? I ordered some seeds from Desertscape Nursery, These seeds come from large W.Fillabustas from Corrales NM. z7b was z7a . They are claimed to be very hardy.

I know of one in Greenville in front of a building at Greenville Tech, but it has been taken out, not sure why. This is an 8A climate zone.

I read from another they bought from PD that came from Truth or Consequences NM z8 and they had a hard time with them in La. I was told they would defoliate in single digits without protection but regrow a full crown the next summer . I'll give the supposedly super hardy strain a try. They are said to grow 2-3 ft a year.

You would definitely have to protect for severdl years until some good trunk diameter. I visited Truth or Consequences several years ago and no one there had heard of these palms I was in El Paso on a drive to California and went on up there just to see those palms, lol. I drove a good ways out of my way there. Only positive is Zi pulled a small Dasylirion wheelerii out of a crack in the pavement st bottom of off ramp of highway, lol

The point with that is the most hardy palm,needle palm,is from Fla. But I'll give it a try with the seeds.I agree about growing them up some before planting them in ground .

Later I would buy Trachycarpus from a nursery in Fayetteville Georgia and the nursery worker was as novice as I because I posted photos of them on the old palm forum and everyone replied back they were Washingtonias, so I grew it and had many good years with it.(protected of course) A winter storm eventually blew its top covering off and it died. It was a W.robusta. You do have mild winters but if you think you would be protecting it, a Washingtonia robusta should perform and look excellent. They can grow a full crown in a growing season as well. Sorry your photo didn't post but I've often read about those Truth or Consequences palms being extremely hardy in that dry arid climate. W.filifera hates winter humidity, especially north of the deep south palm growing areas and hopefully W. filibusta is ok with it and it's more likely than not, a z7a/z7b New Mexico is quite different than the "east of the Mississippi zones" I love Washingtonias and will be planting a 3g Robusta in the spring. Washingtonias certainly rival Sabal palmetto but palmetto is hardier for me. You should have no problem germinating those seeds.

They are a desert palm. Etsy had some seeds left a few hours ago

(btw) - I've followed Will's NC Washingtonia for many years. I thought it was a W. robust. Besides the trunk thickness, wasn't seeing an upsweep of fronds at the crown. It is truly magnificent though. That nursery sells things I love and wished they sold specimen plants bigger than seedlings but seedlings grow. I've grown Kirils Bulgarian trachy from seed and they are dependable like Washingtonias. Thanks for sharing Nick.

I looked up Nainital India where T.Nanital is from and it's z7b.The same goes for Fayetteville NC z7b/8a and other towns where sub zero palms have survived.they're all listed as 7b or 8a.Whena palm survives 0 temps in z7b, everyone thinks that means z6 Not

They can tolerate some cold but hardcore freezes will kill them. I've never grown that hybrid but find a good micro climate.

I got some seeds to day from cold hardy stock 6 b Oregon but it will take a few years before they are big enough to plant.I am ordering a 3/4ft Fillabusta from North West Palms Washington but they only claim it to be hardy in z8 + without protection. So...I'll buy one and protect when we get cold snaps in the teens or lower as long as I can. I think they are pretty palms.I love the Redwood boot strap trunks .
