Winter coming Posted by Lloyd IA on November 20, 2024, 9:09 am A reminder that the seasons are changing. Thankfully we received about four inches of rain over the past three weeks to recharge subsoil a bit before going into our dry winter season.

Most years we don’t ever get a rabbit tracking snow just a skiff of a dusting In northern Greenville County they usually do get measurable snow. It seems north of Interstate 85 is the normal route for snow in South Carolina . We can get bad ice storms here. Hopefully not this year. I hope you have a milder than normal winter. I see thss as t nice Agave in the snow.

I thought I was done for todays yard work but I have a Agave brasiliana and purple jews to dig up and bring indoors. So thank you for posting that beautiful arid garden. It sure developed quickly. Those huge glacial erratics (Glacier rocks) are amazing and a work of art. I also have about 7 other potted agaves I must bring in tonight and some small potted palms. I wish I had a dry winter climate. The rains, ice storms and winter humidities are so destructive and arids and semi-tropicals arent happy here. Thanks my friend.

Red Flag Warning Posted by Rob N TN on November 20, 2024, 12:34 pm, in reply to "Re: Winter coming" whoa, that's the worst type Lloyd. The fire danger must be very serious there. High winds, dried vegetation and low relative humidity is the blame for this critical warning. Be safe Lloyd (and family) fires could start and spread to great distances in extremely short periods of time.

We had almost four inches of much needed rain over the last three weeks so the soil is moist. But with 50mph winds the grass does dry out fast. We have been under fire warnings a lot this year.

The seats of my truck are currently covered with trays of agave and cactus I wanted to stay dry. The extended forecast is very dry and not too cold - a few lows around zero in December but don't see anything extreme out there.

Lots of areas across the country was very dry this year. We stayed in some form of a drought all summer and still way below average. In November we almost always have big wind storms and rain but not this year. Being in a mountainous terrain with woodlands everywhere, fire warnings trigger me. Those winds you all are having are concerning and hope you get through that forecast period very well.

I am expecting my first flakes of the season, tomorrow, from the same weather system, that gave you several inches. However, no accumulation is expected, here. Actually, this is late for my first snow. An inch of snow is average for the month of October. Too warm, this past October (and dry), for any snow. Nice xeric pic.

And never have fire risks during the growing season as our soils support green growth even during drought. It is winter when everything is brown and bone dry that things can burn.
