Back Into Things Posted by Jake- Morristown, TN on November 14, 2024, 10:17 pm Hello everyone! It has been quite a few years since I posted on here. I used to live in Florida and then Kentucky and now I’m in East TN. There is actually a house near where I live that had a very matured Windmill Palm that never sees protection. They also have a large pindo and several sabal minors. Gets me excited. Does anyone have any seeds of anything they aren’t growing? I used to grow a lot from seed and would like to do that. Palms, bananas, natives, other? I don’t have anything to trade, but could work out a price. Would just like to get back into it. Thanks you

The Morristown area has seen a zonal creep in the past few years and the greater Knoxville area has a decent climate. I live 15 miles north of Monterey but im usually 1/2 zone warmer than the Monterey-Crossville area. I have Musa Basjoo (tons) but it might be best to wait till spring to share. Although bananas are still up, this time next week, the weather will change on the Plateau and I plan on chopping down 7 large plats in the next 3 days and get it over with. I do have some sabal minor x tennessee seed and needle palm seed I can send you if you want to try your luck germinating over winter. you can email me at - robolgatree (at gmail dot com) if you want. Nice to hear of those palms growing near you. I lost my Pindo last year but several Tennesseeans on this forum did not by using some protection better than I did. Im going to be in coastal Alabama and Florida in about 3 weeks and driving my F-150. If I find a smaller trunked/regenerated sabal palmetto, Im bringing it back

I normally cut all the inflorescences off so they don’t see but apparently I missed a couple years ago and so there’s lots of ceilings at the bottom of one tree I have so I could send you those in the spring if you like. I grew up just north of you in Knox County Kentucky about two counties away from you and it’s a beautiful part of the country. All my Trachycarpus I grew from seed and they’re all mature now mostly. I have one needle palm, One Butia, one needle palm And if you say minors. I do grow Musa basjoo In a few tropical, looking plants, other than palms and I grow cactus and succulents a lot of Trichocereus Species from Argentina and lots and lots of leaf succulents. I have experimented with a lot of succulents I bought at Home Depot that are supposedly house plants, but mostly they are all pretty hard to hear lots of Sedeveria, Echeveria , sedums, Sempervivums and other succulents. I grow lots of Hardy Agave Species. I probably grew way more than I need to be growing because I’m getting old. It’s kinda hard to keep up with it. I had open heart surgery back in February but I’m doing great so I guess I’ll be around for a little while longer. lol. , Anyway, It’s nice to see your pose palm Seedlings would be best to be pulled up, sitting in the spring. Send me your address in the spring whenever you’re ready for him and I’ll send you some Trachycarpus plants.

There is another Tennessee palm buddy ROB, that lives near Bristol and I will bring him one back also if I can find something not terribly tall. Gotta love Sabal Palmetto. They are about as hardy as a windmill but they don't like those low temps every night. Banana will do great in Morristown along with Yucca rostrata and Yucca elata. Can't go wrong with needle palm and sabal minor either, bullet proof. In winter, Windmills just need a little protection 4 or 5 nights in winter, if that. Tall flume grasses are nice and don't forget some evergreens. Magnolias, Hollies, Azaleas and Rhododendrons (all native) make a good landscape.
