Palm winter protection video Posted by Jason Western PA on November 9, 2024, 6:42 pm Today was the day. We got the palm almost done. What a job. My hands are all cut up and stiff from the sharp frond stalks. It only grew maybe a foot and a half. It's slowing down. I had the pleasure to meet one of the students at our school. Jen has had him in class and he is a huge seed and plant kid. He is in 5th grade. At school he talked to Jen about a sabal palm. I gave him one of my sabal minors and he was so happy. Today he stopped with his mom and dad just in time to see me covering the palm. In thanks he gave me a avocado tree he had started from seed. I gave him a tour of the yard and greenhouse. I have him some cactus starts and a pink EE plant. I'm sure he didn't stop talking on the ride home. haha It doesn't help that he lives in Parker near the post office. haha

Those guys, in Central PA, who made videos of their tall windmills, are reminiscent of your procedure. Do you re-use your protection supplies, one year to the next? I remember you mentioned roots showing above ground, on one or more of your Windmills. Is your house above grade, or is the land on a slope?

That protection looks so slick and not the least bit tacky. It's actually a beautiful column. Pre-treatment for varmints is a great idea. I normally use 100 minis per foot of trunk here in the highlands for a palm under 5 foot. I string my minis first, bottom to top and place a handful in the crown then tie it up tight like you did but then its just 2 or 3 wraps of frost cloth and a tarp over all that to keep it dry. I hope to build a nice box like yours one day and I think your weather kept your growth down some but a foot and a half is still very well done friend. It's a please seeing such a big palm in your state, thanks again.

You have really been working hard. Your video looks professional anybody’s growing palms in cold climates sure learn a lot from your video. Your palms look wonderful and are growing great. They are for sure the best looking palms in Pennsylvania dur to your good methods of protecting them,

I do use the insulation and all that stuff year to year. I store the wood in my shed and the insulation in my basement. The roots are covered with mulch inside the box. When spring comes I'll build it up with dirt. My house sits on a flat spot. Really our whole farm is flat. We are on a peninsula by the clarion river. the sides are steep, the point is slopped down to the river.

If it makes you feel any better, standard information on Trachycarpus growth is quite normal at 1 ft per growing season so you still had amazing growth. Keep up the good fight. Thanks

Your protection method works and that's all that matters. I used 2 packs of burlap on my small windmill with c7 lights on the tree. Theres actually a windmill palm growing unprotected in town here.
