In My Garden Today

I received some disappointing news from Annie's Annuals and Perennials Nursery. They sold a wide variety of hard to find plants. The current owner says the could reopen, if a buyer is found:
Dear Annie’s Community,
After many wonderful years, it’s with a heavy heart that I share that Annie’s Annuals & Perennials has closed its doors effective today, October 3, 2024.
Thank you to everyone who has made Annie’s such a special place—our amazing team, loyal customers, trusted suppliers, and the beloved Richmond community. I’m grateful beyond words for the support you’ve given Annie’s. Thank you for embracing us and coming back year after year.
I feel it’s important to share that my health has played a significant role in reaching this point. Over the past few months, I have faced serious and unexpected health challenges. Throughout this difficult time, I’ve worked tirelessly to explore every possible way to keep the nursery going. Sadly, despite my best efforts, the challenges—both personal and business-related—escalated much faster than I ever anticipated, and I could no longer maintain business operations.
Even as I step away, I remain hopeful that Annie’s legacy can live on. Discussions with potential buyers are progressing with the hope that Annie’s brand and offerings endure.
Though our doors are closing, I hope the plants and memories you’ve taken home will continue to grow and thrive in your gardens for many years to come.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the unforgettable memories. Its been an honor to serve you.
With warmest gratitude,
Sarah
I am germinating some seeds of the PRAIRIE ACACIA, Acacia angustissima. This is perhaps, the cold-hardiest of all the Acacias. The genus are mostly trees, but this cold hardy specimen, is a shrub. Here's one of the seedlings...
This is an order of plants I got from Far Reaches Farm Nursery. Pictured below are: a Berkeya purpurea, a Kunzea 'Badja Carpet', a Melianthus major, a Hellonias bullata, and a Cardiocrinum giganteum 'Big Pink'
Here are some plants I got from Plant Delights Nursery. Pictured below, is: a Calanthe 'Kozu Spice' hardy orchid, a Patrinia scabiosifolia, a Verbena bonariensis, an Asphodeline lutea, and an Oxblood Lily...
Perhaps, my final plant order from Annie's. In the pic below, are: a Fabiana imbricata, a Calceolaria 'Kentish Hero', an Anchusa azurea, and a Streptosolen jamesonii...
Below is a pic of some new plants, I got from High Country Gardens. Pictured below are: a Gaillardia 'Mesa Peach', an Agastache 'Kudos Mandarin', a dwarf Candytuft 'Purity', and a Sunrose 'Ben Ledi'...

Alvin, that is a great variety of new plants you have ordered. I love Acacia and your germinated prairie acacia is great. The hardy red ginger is nice. Many gingers are hardy here but I don’t grow any. My yard is do hot and dry with no shade except in back woods. My semi- sunny areas are filled with shade lovers. Since I had to take out the two large trees in my backyard, many of my hosta and hydrangea are suffering. In spring, if I get some help, we II will relocate some to what little afternoon shade I have. I am sorry to hear Snnies is closing. I have bought from them a couple of times. For the plant people who appreciate hard to find Genera and species, they will miss Annie’s.
Thanks, Fred. I have a few more seeds soaking. They have been soaking for over a week, with daily water changes. I should have rubbed them on sandpaper, before soaking, to scarify, first. Their seed coats are hard to penetrate without scarification. Hopefully, Annie's will get a buyer. Annie retired, a few years back, and Sarah took over. Now, she is sick. So unfortunate.
