Pictures/pawpaws Posted by Jason Western PA on September 28, 2024, 5:45 pm The pictures I'm seeing out of the south are bad. Still praying for all. We are still getting some rain here but nothing like that. On a better note, we picked pawpaws today. We saved some but the lady across the river would like some so we are giver her the rest.

Jason do you find them growing as under story trees and near creeks or small rivers ? That's where you find them here. Never a big fan of the bland taste, many people love them. They say they are Americas only native tropical related fruit. Nice to see your son gifting them.

We started a couple hundred in a shelterbelt as an experiment for something that would be a non-invasive almost native to block holes in the shelterbelts. All were seeds from named selections so a chance of some having good taste. We did learn that primarily the ones originating from the NW part of their range adapted to our wild temperature swings. Two years in a row of 90s to 8 and back up to 80s in mid-October did a number on the ones of eastern origin. A few planted near the house took a beating since the wood is weak. They don't care for sustained winds of 70 mph sometimes gusting to 100 mph. That is why the shelterbelts are good locations for them.

They are protected down there also from winter winds. The wind can be blowing hard and down there the trees down even blow.

I guess you would call it a mega-sized windbreak. Several acres around a farmstead is devoted to one. On the north and west sides to protect from the winter winds. Outer couple rows shrubs, then 20 to 50 feet open as a snow catch area. Then several rows of deciduous trees such as bur oaks or hackberry, black walnut, etc. Then a few rows of conifers like ponderosa pine, concolor fir, black hills spruce, redcedar. It is not bad working outside around zero degrees in the sun with no wind. But step outside the protected area into 30 or 40 mph winds and it is a different story. Also we almost never have vertical snow out here, it comes down sideways driven by the wind. A 1" snowfall blows along the ground until it finds something that slows the wind down, then that 1" snow has created a ten foot tall drift. Shelterbelts are necessary and also provide a haven for all the critters to overwinter in.

Presumably because there were no megafauna left after the last ice age to bring them back north. Native Americans brought the better tasting ones back north with them as the ice receded.
