Oleander Posted by Tom in PA on September 21, 2024, 5:43 pm Man do I wish oleander was cold hardy here! There is lots of it in Sandbridge VA and it grows into a pretty good sized shrub there. Not sure if I’ll dig this up. It’s been blooming like crazy this summer.

I had one of the hardier varieties live a few years in ground for me. I would take a few cuttings of those ones down in Virginia. All you have to do is stick them in water for a few weeks or so. They root easily just in water, then pot them up. Kevin seTN

Kevin I was visiting Cookeville Regional Medical Center this past week and noticed they had Musa Basjoo and Oleander in front of the entrance tower (faces west) Do you think it will survive there long term? I was surprised to see it. Thanks

Oleander blooms on new wood ? Posted by Rob N TN on September 22, 2024, 2:39 pm, in reply to "Re: Oleander " Unlike other shrubs, oleander blooms in late spring and summer on young secondary branches, i.e. branches that are at least one year old and which begin growing in the same year that older branches develop flowers. Keep that in mind Tom if you decide to trim back and protect. It's hideous and tacky but a good lump of straw covering that bush would protect it in z6b. Anything I plant that might be hideous and tacky is always in the back or side yards Many people here only plant banana in their back yards. I seem to be good at given out protection advice after losing a nice Sago and Butia last winter but they were in my front yard. Your Oleander is beautiful.

But did manage to have some for several years before it finally kicked the bucket. Always looked terrible coming out of winter tho and wouldn't really bloom til August most the time.

I may dig it since Kevin has done it with success. I wasn’t sure if they liked their roots to be disturbed. I hear you keeping the protected plants to the backyard. My wife would agree with that 😂. Whether she likes it or not I’ll be protecting the Butia in the front. Also will be wrapping my newest crape for its first winter. Grazie amico!

Since your oleander did well being dug up I’m seriously thinking about digging mine up. A hardy variety would be great and I would try it here. It’s not something I’ve seen for sale though.
