Crapes and a few other plants Posted by Tom in PA on September 6, 2024, 8:35 pm It’s been a hot summer here with plenty of 90 plus days. I hope everyone has had a good growing season. Here are my crapes. These are not all current. Only Dynamite is in full bloom now. Natchez Colorama- This replaced one of my banana clumps. Hopi Tonto Tuscarora Black Diamond Yucca Gloriosa and hardy hibiscus Palms This is Gerry’s Jungle Sabal palm that has been in ground maybe a decade. I think the mother plant is from north Georgia. It looks to me like it may be forming a trunk. Thoughts? Outer Banks Sabal palmJason picked up for me Needles Here is my Butia Odorata from Steve. It has grown a few inches and has put out 6 or 7 fronds this summer. Last here is my Longleaf pine. Thanks for looking!

Those palms are doing well. Happy your sabal minor I got you is doing well. Mine is getting seeds this year. Love that long leaf pine. I have a handful I'm trying here on the farm. We will see. They are about 8 inches high.

Years ago I used to say I wish the flowering trees in spring never stopped blooming and with Crape Myrtles they don't It's so hard to pick a favorite because the colors are overwhelming but I love Natchez. It will bloom here for over 6 months yearly. The Yucca Gloriosa and Hibiscus are perfect in your stunning neighborhood. It does look like those sabals are trunking. Tom did you know Gerry passed away a few years ago. He was living up on the space coast. He will always be remembered as a true pioneer. He was always so kind and helpful. Tom your Needles and Butia look very nice. Butia is picky in z7 temps Your long leaf Pine is soaring. I love that pine. Thanks for sharing Tom. i più cordiali saluti alla tua preziosa famiglia.

The long leaf is gorgeous, wife’s favorite evergreen. It is a good year for Butia here. Perhaps you saw my wife’s Butia that I recently posted. It too has grown out several new fronds . Yes, Tom, your Georgia Sabal appears to be on verge of trunking. It will be trunking for sure in a year or so. I enjoyed seeing the hardy hibiscus and all your plants.

Mine has seen zone 6 lows. They will grow slowly for a few years and all of the sudden they’ll start growing fast. Hopefully my Outer Banks Sabal will bloom next summer. Thanks Jason!

Mimosa Posted by Tom in PA on September 9, 2024, 9:09 am, in reply to "Re Crapes and a few other plants" Hey Amico, I forgot to post the mimosa you sent me. Check it out. It’s huge now and produces lots of blooms. I have seedlings that pop up all over my yard 😁. You are right about Natchez blooming a long time. It bloomed for months here. I love the peeling bark on it as much as the flowers. I didn’t know Gerry passed away! God rest his soul. Such nice guy and nobody knew more about palms and hardy palms than him. I learned a lot from my yearly orders talking to him over the phone. That Butia will get wrapped and have heat. I hope it makes it! If grows as many fronds every summer like this one it will have a chance. I see so many in Sandbridge VA where we go. They are such beautiful palms! Molto grazie amico mio. Dio ti benedica. Here’s the mimosa. I need to trim some of the lower branches off. It will look better that way.

Longleaf pine to me is the most beautiful pine. So far as I’ve seen nobody grows one here. Hopefully the Sabal doesn’t lose hardiness after trunking. Thanks Fred!
