Butia, Gerberas and roses Posted by Fred SC on September 6, 2024, 10:58 am Dorothy’s rose her granddd sad on gave her is beginning to ress as Lily bloom since the temps have moderated some. Gerbera daisy’s are still blooming . Wife’s Butia odorata that I gave her as a Mother’s Day present two summers past is doing great. It has added several new fronds. It didnt survive a below norm zonal stretch of temps and it died. I might get another one day but honestly these USDA growing zones dont seem to work for my minimal z7. My Gerbers didnt come back either but those are beautiful. Thanks for sharing Fred

Ii they survive the summer, I’ll move them into the back yard with less afternoon sun. The hot afternoon sun here is just too intense now!

Drought Posted by Rob N TN on September 6, 2024, 10:52 pm, in reply to "Re: Butia " I understand completely. Things are looking a tad tepid. I meant to water this evening but didn't. We were suppose to catch a brief shower but it went into Kentucky north of Franklin. My next shot of rain is next Friday . I do have a water hose and will be using it. We are suppose to have some 50*s low morning temps but highs stay in middle 80*s or better for the next week. Keep those Gerbers wet until you transplant them, Summer has been hellacious.

It is in a sunny snd totally exposed spot in my front. That is not ideal, as winter winds with temps below 20 degrees is enemy number one for Butia here. We rarely have temps below 30 but it does h aspen about once or twice annually. During the last vortex, only those Butia less exposed made it, or if they lived they were heavily damaged and took years to recover. I know of one large one near me that was heavily damaged but has recovered completely. It is an old one, a beautiful one near a pool. Most pools here are uncovered during winter here, do perhaps that helped it survive? It got do cold, however, pool may have frozen over if water wasn’t moving . So , if frozen , pool would have made no difference.
